Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Oh, something I forgot about (not sure how). I got pulled over for the first time in the Clio tonight. I was going through some roadworks, having just been waiting for the lights to go green, I pulled away and I was a bit heavy on the accelerator, I don't think I was speeding, but I just accelerated a bit too aggressively for their liking, and I passed them as they were waiting on the other side (I didn't see them as it was dark).

I saw their reverse lights go on straight away, and I carried on my way. Then I saw their lights go on, it's quite scary but because I was already quite a way down the road it did cross my mind to put my foot down and make a turn down a side road. Then I realised that would be the most retarded thing ever, so I pulled over and waited for them.

Two women, one was very nice, and I was very sorry. Then the other opened the window of the police car and was a bit nasty to me, calling me stupid and stuff. They said they expected a 17 year old to get out of the car :p

Anyway, I was very apologetic, said I realised I had no excuse and that it won't happen again. They let me go and told me to be careful. Very nice of them :)

Proper **** me up though! :p

If you think a tatty car with a terminal engine is worth any more, you need to re-evaluate what you think you know about cars.

I got 200 quid for a rusty Mk2 Mondeo with a pond in the boot and a snapped cambelt.

A Clio 172 with a snapped cambelt is surely worth more. You reckon on 1k to turn it into a nice example with a 60k mile engine - how much is the equivilent on the used market? More than 1300 quid..

That is what it would cost me - I'm fortunate enough to have friends in the right trades so I can get the parts at near cost price, borrow the specialist tools for nothing, get stuff painted for the cost of paint + beer money. On top of this there is a lot of labour involved, much more than around £1400 and it simply becomes not worth it - the other people that viewed this car came to the same conclusion as me, all within £100 and I doubt they were looking at engines sat at the top end of the market, either - the similarities in price are no coincidence.

I don't know when it was sold, but the difference with your Mondeo is that the buyer could have picked an engine up from the scrap yard for £50, spent a day doing it and flogged it on for £500 - this is not an uncommon practice, especially for an out of/low on work self-employed mechanic. You'd probably be lucky if he even changed the cambelt on the replacement engine.

Of course, that is just one possible scenario - I think you were very lucky to get £200 for a rusty MK2 Mondeo, and it isn't really a good example. To provide a counter-example, I had a perfectly working 1.6 Escort with MOT and a little bit of tax left and could not get more than £100 for it.

Viewing a nice 54 plate Clio 182 FF tomorrow... 58k on the clock, all belt changed recently. Appears to have been very well maintained. Looking forward to it :)

Well, despite being completely skint, I've already spent much of next months pay which is coming to me on Friday. A set of H&R coilovers came up on ClioSport for a great price, so I figured I'd buy them.

So I'll have my 8 week old, and practically brand new (once I've washed them) KTR coilovers available and wondered if anyone was after some. I know I can't sell outside of the MM, so need to be careful. But they'll be up on CS.net this weekend :)

Argh damn you to hell

*looks under sofa for pennies*

He scrapped the car as it had terminal rot underneath once the sideskirts came off :(

Because you fail at cars, this much is quite evident over your time posting here :p

Well, that is a risk he took - unless it was a time that scrap prices were ridiculously high?

You think a car with peeling paint on the bumper revealing another colour, every wheel curbed, scuffs on the back bumper, wing mirror taped on and with a terminal engine is worth more than £300, and you think I fail at cars?

I love the way that in true MikeHiow style the car gets worse as we go on. You'll tell us the seats were covered in excrement next.

That description matches my first perfectly, apart from the revealing another colour part which isn't strictly relevant on a car that cheap.

Well not going to say where it is exactly but its in devon :)

hmm I don't know them personally, but know of someone who had one down here so might know where you mean :)

Kind of wish I had mine still, fun little thing it was but just needed something a little bigger.

Sold it for £2300 with well over 100k on the clock, wheels that needed a refurb, fuel gauge that had a mind of it's own sometimes and a dent in the side!

2 questions!

1. Can someone please give me a direct link to the skoda splitter? Don't want to order the wrong one!

Scarysquirrel, your alloys are awesome (turinis?) How much are they likely to set me back?

Yeh thats the one.
They can be had slightly cheaper from a dealer but it's only a few quid and means a trip there, or possibly 2 if they have to order one in.
