Who here owns a Renaultsport?

No one have any suggestions as to why my display isn't lighting up at night when the lights are on but comes on when the lights are off :S ?

Also with regards to the stereo, is there no way to modify it so it works with an ipod (instead of changing the actual stereo)

I've got some Connects2 ipod unit screwed to the top of my glovebox (inside), it was hooked up to the standard head unit to play an iPod. It was good, but you had to select songs on the iPod itself, or you could flick through songs on the stalk controls/unit, but you couldn't browse albums, playlists, etc. Hence why I got the Alpine unit.

Search for Connects 2 (I think that's what it is)

Just reading through some pages on CS and noticed a thread about optimal gear change light on dash... can't say I've noticed this before when I've been driving, then again I've not driven to near the red line. Any one else noticed this before on their 182/172?

EDIT: come to think of it, I have noticed a little green gear stick symbol appear on ignition. This must be it. And reading in to it further, it appears to come on around 7k rpm. Rev limit is about 7200 I believe?

I've seen it a few times, mine seems to appear at around 6800rpm, I've never hit the rev limiter in my car though but 7200 sounds about right, unless you've got a remap, which I think can raise the limiter to 7500rpm.

The gear change light will appear in the bottom right of the dials just next to the speedo :)

I spotted this light a few times last night, but there is so much going on when the car is screaming away at 7k RPM, you don't really get a chance to look at it :D

Guys, where do I get replacement thumb grips from? One of mine are ripped, and my local dealer claims they are not available separately.

Also, someone mentioned something a while ago about dropping the drivers seat by removing some vibration washers, has anyone got any more info? A heads up on what replacement washers and tools are required would be a great help. (I'm not that stupid - I only ask so I know what I need to take down the Unit :P).

You need to get the Car remapped using an RS Tuner if it isn't already. If the car hits the limiter at 7250 rpm rather than around 7500 rpm its still standard. The change light comes on later after the remap. It may be worth investing in a refurb steering wheel as mentioned a page or so back, but not cheap at around £150 on a exchange basis. No idea if you can get the thumb grips, but you could try www.cliospares.com

I currently hate my 182 although it does now appear to be working again, and you would hope so after all the money i've just spent fixing it (almost as much as it cost you to buy your 182). If it lasts another few months i'll be happy and i'll get shot of it for something else. I could have run something more exotic for the amount of money its cost me over my 4 years ownership. I wouldn't buy another Renaultsport. Fun but fragile (and expensive to fix, considering its an old small French hatchback) is how i'd describe them.

I don't know what I should be more worried about, your experience of the 182, or the fact I don't care :D

I hope you have many years of trouble free motoring in your 182, unfortunately they do tend to throw up expensive bills especially at Aux / Cam belt change time. Given what you paid for the car and given it has the potential to throw up a bill which costs a fair percentage of what you paid for the car i hope you are lucky. If you can do the work yourself or have access to a nearby specialist great. I expect the costs for your Aux belt kit / cam belt kit and dephaser pulley (as mentioned in the other thread) will be the best part of £400 just for the parts.

Im not so lucky, I can't do the work myself and specialists in my neck of the woods are fairly non existant, so main dealers its been unfortunately :(

Yup, the cheapest I've managed to obtain decent parts (ie. Gates/SKF Belts, Genuine Dephaser, obviously) is around £360.

Fortunately, the Warranty company should pick up £300 of that.

I did about 90k in my old phase 1 172, never had any nasty bills or surprises over normal servicing.

Find a specialist or at least someone who has done the belts on the before for belt changes as they are a pig of a job. Many a story on CS from people who have gone somewhere for the work as it's been cheap only to then have timing problems as the right tools were not used etc etc.

First time I had my belts done I paid £500 for a 36k service (major) and a full, genuine, cam belt kit.

Second time round I paid about £500 for just a minor service plus the full genuine belt kit and fitting.

The 'shift light' isn't an optimal change light, too high up the range for that. It's a 'change the ******* gear now' light to warn that you are about to bounce off the limiter :)

Also remember that the limiter is dependant on if the car has been warmed up or not, it is initially set lower and rises as the engine gets up to temp.

As has been said, thumb grips not available seperately, although KTEC at one point were offering carbon fibre replacements that clipped over I think. But vaguely remember hearing that the quality wasn't too good on them.

Having read up about the 197 wheel, it seems like unless you know what you're doing it's pretty hard to get everything working correctly. I know if I tried the airbag would probably go off in my face!
