Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Gutted to see my Cup go today, felt so nice after its new clutch. Sold within 8 hours of it being advertised so pretty good, going to miss it though :(

Guys, I need some suggestions on what to do with the engine cover and inlet manifold, both are beyond cleaning;

Check out the engine bay thread on CS. Can get the plenum polished etc. Though tbh I don't see the point other than a few cheap cosmetic mods to spruce it up. Rather spend the money on performance upgrades or petrol!

Picked her up today.

The condition is awesome, one owner from new. Wheels look brand spanking new, so does the body work but usual tiny marks from being 6 years old (but thats being very anal).

Such fun! Can't wait for my 200mile trip to the Highlands tomorrow! :)

You shouldn't look forward to the trip (although, I imagine there will be some awesome roads when you get there!), they are ghastly on long trips. That said, I found a certain increase in comfort since lowering the seat, so I'd definitely consider doing that before you go.

All you need is a long 13mm socket and possibly an extension, seat unbolts from under the car - two nuts under rubber plugs closest on the outside, and two accessible by holes in the exhaust heatshield.

Then all you do is remove those silly black spacers and replace with a few pieces of rubber (I cut up an innertube) or washers.

I was bent over at Renault today, finally ordered the bits I needed after being messed around by someone who was selling the stuff I needed on CS - de-phaser pulley, aux belt kit, two cam caps and a crank bolt - £302 inc. VAT, and that was at trade, too!

Still need to cough up £75 for the cambelt kit, which I found someone selling on the owners club. Then £40 for oil, filter and plugs to do at the same time.

At least it'll be done anyway. It's still costing me a lot less than getting a "specialist" to do it :)

The seat will be getting lowered at somepoint, though am not sure if it has or not as the passenger side seems higher than the drivers!

I have to leave in half an hour, so would be a bit rushed. If I managed this journey in a POS Astra for a year, I'm pretty sure I can manage it in this. Plus I may just need to take a few detours! :)

You doing all the work yourself?

Also Mike, as your a bit of a detailing guru, any chance on a run down on some of the best products to be buying?

What colour is it?

For Dark colours and no machine polisher I'd be buying PBW Blackhole and something like Colonite's wax.

For lighter colours, I'd personally use something like AG Super Resin Polish and Z2P.

For wheel cleaner I just use AG stuff now as I go through it quite fast and I can get it cheap locally.

Pretty much any tyre shine will do, I like megs endurance stuff.

AG Fastglass for glass and dashboard.

Beyond that just the usual PH neutral shampoo, clay bar, autosmart tardis for tar spots, couple of buckets, mitt, mf towels, applicator sponges etc.

Oh, and if you've bought a 182 you'll want some Autosol or similar metal polish for those exhausts. I've found an old polishing pad to start and then cheap polishing cloth on a roll for "refining" the best combo so far.

This stuff is utterly brilliant!

If you want to spruce your wheels up.

Take them off and give them a going over, backs too, with wonderwheels (it's quite acidic and not brilliant for the clearcoat if used regularly, once a year won't hurt) but it'll get everything off. Then give them 2/3 coats of poorboys wheel sealant.

I tried tar removers but the only thing that actually worked for me was WW. Don't think mine had been protected properly by the previous owners.

Which wheels benny? 182 and cup wheels can look great when tidy, but the stock 172 wheels look pants regarless! Lol.

Tempted to get mine sprayed black with a yellow rim, for the lols!

ValetPro Bilberry Wheel Cleaner - It's AWESOME!

Oh, and personally I don't find my Clio bad at all for long journeys. Bit noisy, but if yours is stock exhaust etc, should be fine!

Mike, firstly will that PoorBoys BlackHole stuff be good for my Arctic Blue Clio? and how different is it to Super Resin Polish? I'm looking for something which will at least reduce the swirl marks a little without the need for a machine polisher.

Also, with the Autosol, is the best method to clean the exhaust first, then polish with the Autosol? Or do I need to do something more than this?

Thanks

Autosol is absolutely mind boggling, its simply amazing stuff.

When i did my old exhaust i washed it down to get any loose surface dust and grime off, then scrubbed the exhaust with neat autosol and a wire brush, then polished it off with a microfibre.

Went from this...

I reckon Blackhole should be ok. It's a lot less dusty than SRP, but like SRP it needs to be worked quite hard to get the best results. By hand, you'll probably find it'll do a fair job of marring/light swirls, but burnishing the paint with it will bring out a decent shine too.

You want to make sure your exhaust isn't covered in grit, but beyond that just polish it. Do the outsides first - I start with an old 4" polishing pad to get the hard soot and discolouration, then refine by pulling some polishing cloth side to side over/around the exhaust.

I found the inside cleaned up really easily on my standard exhaust - I just wedged aforementioned polishing pad in there and gave it a few rotations and it was gleaming.

Once you've done it, you'll find it's easy to keep clean in future with just the pressure washer and perhaps a quick wipe around.

Edit:

Alex, that's quite a transformation! I'm loving how even the welds came up.

A wire brush is perhaps a little extreme unless it's really bad like above, you can see some of the resulting scratches in the tail pipe. Wire wool is great for stubborn bits.

Any wheels! Just munches through tar and dirt and all manner of stuff so easily. And it's dead cheap too. Just don't get any on yourself as it's a bit itchy.

When you do use it properly protect the wheels after so that you don't have to use it again as I said it's not brilliant for the clear coat if used lots.

bet that took ages. should have just wet sanded it tbh, then used autosol to polish it up at the end:p
