Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Interesting day yesterday, drove to Bedford to watch my friend at a how fast session, parked up whilst he had his noise test, went to start my car again...nothing! Starter motor has packed up, managed to bump start it and get it home but a massive pain in the bum...just incredibly glad it didn't happen in Europe last week!

Was that the red twingo?

each? sod that!

Yeah. Refurb kit is £20 for a pair. I'm gonna replace the disks immediately to get rid of the noise and vibration, then find someone to refurb the front calipers and change the fluid for me some time between now and my next track day.

Anyone know of a good mechanic near Southampton?

Hey guys,

So the time has finally come, moving out of house and into London.

Could people please have a look at my proposed listing and give me some feedback? Would also be nice to hear what you think it's worth.

You’re looking at a 2004 Renault Clio Sport with both cup packs (spoiler and suspension)

I bought the car in January 2011 at 75,000 and have done just less than 5,000 miles in it. It currently has 79,500 miles on the clock.

For the most of the time, the car has been sat in my Garage. It’s in tiptop condition and needs a new owner! The only reason I’m selling is because I don’t use it enough to justify the insurance / outgoings. I wash the car at least once a month and treat it with a lot of care – You’ll notice this yourself if you come to view it. The car has road tax until Jan 2013.

The car has just had a brand new battery installed and unlike many other 182 clios, the air conditioning works a treat (Recently had the pollen filter changed and re-gassed) There are 4 x hankook v12 tyres on the car with 5mm tread

The cambelt and auxbelt were changed in 2010 and has only done around 10,000 miles. (This has to be changed every 36,000 miles or every 5 years so you’re fine here)

It has just passed an MOT (Expires Aug 2013) test and has had a few modifications done to it. (However, these modifications are all top spec and were recommended by users on the clio sport forums)

The car has a full service history up to 68k mile.

I spent a total of £1784 making alternations to the car – all the details are below

1.New turini alloys – These cost me over £600 and are in as new condition.
Please see here for a link to exact model http://www.larkspeed.com/index.pl?p=SP2120716SI&a=i

2.Miltek Exhaust – Fitted at miles – Stainless steel and a massive improvement over the stock exhaust.
Please see here for a link to the exact model

3.The car has been re-mapped professionally by AMD Essex, this means that the car is tuned to go through the gears smoothly and generates slightly more torque and BHP. – I have a print out of the car on rollers to prove this and the performance gains.

Please see here for a link to AMD Essex

4.Lowering springs (Eibach sportlines) (note these are not coilovers – they just allow the car to sit a little lower than stock)

Please see here for a link to the exact model

5.New Splitter on the front of the car – Only costs £20 but a pain to fit and makes the front of the car look far superior.

6. New Sony CD player that works with IPODs.

7. Official Renault mats inside

[/I]

Finally, if anyone has any idea what it's worth please do let me know, I paid £3,300 - Have done only 4,500 miles in it and have spent over £1700 on it. I guess I should be asking for around what I paid for it?

Yeah between £3-3300 you may be able to get.

Most likely get some cash for selling the alloys and replacing with standard alloys. Any aftermarket parts do not add to the value of a car.

Even stainless steel exhaust over stock?

NO modifications make a car worth more. Espically your standard hot hatch kind of car.

It may make it seem more worthwhile to some people. But it won't sell for more because of it.

£3k seems about right though.

Modifications will make the car more attractive to some buyers or to someone who was planning on carrying out the work themself as it's less work that needs to be done in the long run But won't add value unfortunately. If you get a buyer who can use the logic of the savings they will make from not having to buy the mods new themselves who might be prepared to pay you a bit more than they probably should you will be lucky.

If & when I come to sell mine the retrimmed wheel will come off and the old go back on as I will still be able to fetch £100 for that on it's own.

I've been fettling with my 172 over the last week.

I've replaced the water bottle and both washer jet pumps. Replaced both washer jets and added new one way valves. If anyone is planning on doing this there is a neat place near the passenger wheel arche where the pipes click in to a clip. It saves cutting the existing pipework. I also fitted a Fabia splitter.

A fair bit of faff, windscreen wipers off, scuttle panel off to get the washer bottle out. Whole bumper off job to get the washer jets off. I got the jets second hand off two different people and was a bit peeved to discover one was completely mauled by mole grips, I assume this is how it was removed. At no point was this mentioned. Luckily most of the scuffs are underneath and not really visible.

I had a washer pump replaced a few months ago, didn't realise that they're the same as the Megane/Laguna ones on Euro Car Parts, I bought one for ~£50 from Renault when I could've spent around £14 for one. Annoyed!

Hey everyone, I have seen quite a few nice examples of these lately and am quite tempted to look at picking one up.

I don't do huge miles but a couple of times a week I will cover 70 miles a day. I was just wondering if one of these would be a hole in the pocket relating to fuel?

Is there anything in particular that needs to be looked at carefully when buying?
Other than looking for a well loved example and not something that has been neglected.

Are these good cars for day to day or are they best kept as a weekend car?

Sorry it is a bit vague, I can give more details and a couple of examples of what I have seen.

They're not bad with fuel at all to be honest. I did a long trip to Scotland and back twice last year, first time I managed just over 40mpg, second time I had 4 people in the car with more luggage, could only manage 34mpg.
I use mine daily to do a 28 mile round trip, it's fine for commuting. It is nice to take it on the occasional weekend hoon though :D

When looking to buy, ensure cam and aux belt have been changed at the required intervals (aux belt every 3 years or 36k, cam belt every 5 years or 72k). Engine mounts are worth checking too - open the bonnet and ask the owner to start it up, the engine shouldn't move too much.
There's a very good buyer's guide on ClioSport, worth signing up.

Do you think I would use much more petrol than a run down 54 plate Astra mk4 1.6? Just curious as I would not want my fuel to increase much more and I do not think it would.

The example I have seen is a 54 plate 172 33000 miles FSH 1 owner. I have a feelin belts will not have been done but this I will find out. The person also wants 3600 for it though p/x is an option though from other cars I have seen this seems high.

Thanks for the help I will sign up to that site.

It wont be as good as the Astra but how much I don't know. I stuck to the speed limit the other day from Peterborough to Newcastle and averaged 45mpg in my 182. Also factor in most people run it on super unleaded which is slightly more expensive.

It definitely should have had the belts done as they are otherwise long overdue. If they haven't I'd be questioning his ability at looking after the car. Price seems a little high for a 172.
