Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Has anybody got any experience with K-Tek in Verwood, Dorset? I'm going with my girlfriend's Dad to get his 182 remapped on Thursday and they said that it's costing About £200-£250 I think. Requires a dyno run, then the remap, and then another dyno run - dyno run is £45 each!

We're also thinking that with a bit of extra power, the brakes are likely to have to be upgraded too - any recommendations?

Just buy an RSTuner and map the car yourself.

You'll not need to upgrade the brakes, gains won't be that big.

Is your 330 broken or something? There is not a huge difference in the economy at all really. Not enough to make any sort of credible difference!

I think it might be a heavy right foot to be fair. My 330 averages at 25 on the trip. I never really thrashed my clio and it would always get over 30. I realise this isnt exactly a massive difference but damnit Fox I want a trophy, dont try to talk me out of it!

Economy is the only argument on my side!!

(Waits for a well constructed arugment :( )

If you want a Trophy because you want a Trophy then get one.

If you want a Trophy because you think it will save you money on petrol you'll be bitterly dissapointed, so dont get one

:)

K-Tec are very well known, most people have good experiences with them.

Not sure I'd bother spending that much on a remap on a relatively standard car, I'd just get an rs tuner and do it yourself.

Brakes won't need touching, standard setup is very very good. Granted it was a phase 1, but in autocars 0-100-0 test in 2000 the Clio performed very well beating most cars including the Porsches.

So if you wanted a fun run-around on a budget, then you'd either spend a bit of money for a Cup or buy the phase 1?

I'd personally buy the phase 1, I prefer them and they are cheaper :)

Ev0, is it worth buying an rstuner to remap a totally standard 172?

or to get the most of it, would you need to decat exhaust, matched inlets etc etc ?

How can you remap it yourself if you then can't dyno it and determine any power gain/loss?

The RSTuner provides you with a generic map thats fairly tried and tested, although there is performance analyzer software included as part of the program. You could run this before and afterwards to see if there are any gains. A custom remap / dyno run may give you marginally better results but you've got to ask whether its worth the additional cost. You can get a custom map for your car via RSTuner which makes use of the performance analyser software and other data logged from the RSTuner.

It's a map developed by a chap who has been mapping Renaults for donkeys years, was even told he'd done something with the cup racer maps.

It's never going to be the same as live mapping a car, but providing a map that's been proven on other standard engines, for a standard car, will show some improvement.

It's all about value for money, do you want to spend out for an RS tuner for a map that'll be better than standard, or spend double for a map that might be a little better to have it dyno'd etc.

So it's up to you what you want to do, personally I went for an RS tuner as couldn't be bothered trekking to one of the tuners, it was cheap, and the car was relatively standard so would only have given so much benefit anyway.

No not really, should be easier to sell the Clio than it was the Civic should I decide I want a DC5.

The Clio is great, but I miss having to work hard to make it go fast? It's just... too easy?
Saying that - I don't have as much confidence in the chassis as I did with the Civic, but I think that's partly down to crappy tyres, will get some PE2's sorted soon.

Well, I did speak to the owner of my future car (:D) but he insisted on going to K-Tek to get it done.

Got it dyno'd and then they put in a preset map and dyno'd again. The results speak for themselves! -

Now I have pondered over these for some time, but my dad's my local mechanic. And being an old git - hates French cars. Now I have tried to convince him they ain't all bad, but he is having none of it.

How bad are they to work on? What about servicing? Any common problems with them?

Thanks guys.

I've had mine for 2 years now and have done 30k miles

Problems i've had include...

Rust on exhaust - hence why you'll see fair few with aftermarket exhausts (~£400 fitted). Also check the exhaust hangers, they are cheapo rubber crap and love to destroy themselves.
Manifold to Cat fittings like to break - would get a slight rattle between 2-3k rpm. Replacement kit cost me £20
Headlight washers never work - who really cares?
Melting steering wheel - slight blistering, nothing too dramatic. Cant say it bothers me.

Other common problems people have had

Rear Shocks can leak - touch wood I haven't had any trouble so far
Climate Control - this is a potential biggy. People have spent best part of £1k getting fixed.
Cam/Aux belt - heard about a few of these failing (true of any make of car). Check it was done by a main dealer or clio specialist.
Engine mounts - seems these can give up fairly easily. I think repalcement's are about £20 a pop

I'm sure there are some I have missed, but overall its your typical french car - Mechanically sound, with a boring interior...

Lots of useful threads on www.cliosport.net that cover the common faults of them plus a lot in this thread too.

I've owned my Cup for mmmm 4 years and in that time the only parts to be replaced are starter motor, battery, rusty exhaust + exhaust mount and abit of a leak.

My steering wheel is fine, but theres a guy on cliosport.net whos offering a leather retrim service which is of a very high standard and fair price.
