Who here owns a Subaru?

Spending ages looking for a Subaru for a friend. He either wants to spend up to £3000 on a classic that is well looked after or £5000 on a blob/hawk eye.

Although there seems to be a massive amount of Estates about but not really any good examples of the saloon.

Can anyone link any cars close to essex that would be worth a look in please?

At 5k for a blob he'd be limited to a WRX or used/abused ruined STI.

Once cars like these hit 5k they become affordable for the knuckle draggers

Been offered a nice looking classic for £2500, good history, no rot, same owner last 10 years, full Subaru history.

Very tempted...

Really? 5k? Seems a lot for a knuckle dragger to spend on a car to abuse. When I was looking for mine, I settled on getting a good bugeye for around 3k. Lots and lots of rubbish for much less than that.

Are blobs worth so much more? I'm sure it was borderline bug/blob for my budget but I decided to go with a very good bug instead.

There plenty of WRXs worth buying at that sort of budget but STIs are holding their value well.

My Dad bought his 2005/55 STI ~2 years ago and could probably sell it for £2k more than he originally paid for it. Blobs especially as they we're the last of the EJ20s which is preffered over the EJ25

I sold my widetrack blob for £8200 about a year ago now and i bet i could get even more for it now! In one hand you think prices have to go down at some point but then look at stuff like Honda Integras and stuff they just hold their price indefinitely.

The only problem with that is that even the bad ones are still at a good money, making it harder and harder to find a decent one.

Which for me.. causes issues! Hence I went to test drive the newest one yesterday.. genuinely interested in it because it looks so good and feels a lot more modern. But crikey it felt slow. I've requested a longer test drive to see how it really feels, but I really was quite unimpressed with the speed of it.

But then after watching various YouTube reviews I found that it just about gets sub 13.5sec 1/4 mile times. My old WRX with an exhaust system did 13.1 so seems a bit too slow for an STi IMO. But definitely explains why it felt slow.

Then I watch my old 12.1 video (360ish bhp at the time) and remember just why I enjoyed that car so much. Hammering through the gears, revving out past 7500rpm. Maybe I need to go JDM..

are the new 2.5 hatch ones riddled with the same problems?

I don't mind the estates either but a lot of them look to be sheds

all the names confuse me bugeye/blobeye/hawkeye etc. I take it its to do with the lights shape?

could someone link some examples of what I should be looking for?

In regards to the lights, yup, that's correct... all to do with the shape! Here's a pic with all 3 (bug/blob/hawk);

I've got a Blobeye WRX and am potentially looking to lower it, but only with springs... Any one here have recommendations for what springs to use please?

The main contender at the moment are PCA Dynamic springs which are replica's of the Prodrive spring, as I don't particularly want to deck the car.

Cheers guys :)

Someone I know has a 02 Bug Eye WRX Wagon and I'm thinking about buying it from him.

It's a completely standard car. What are they like running cost wise? Big things to watch out for?

Completely standard they're known to be very reliable, but parts like the cambelt and clutch are pricey to replace, so definitely check to see when these were last done or factor them in with the cost when buying... Like any car too, regular oil changes etc. Check for rust too, as I believe the bug's can suffer from it a bit?

Running costs wise, it costs me roughly between £50 - £60 to fill a tank. On a long run that can get me around 300+ or around town you're looking at 220 (ish). So not too bad if you ask me!

Someone else probably has some more info on here too... failing that check out Scoobynet for guides etc. :)

Cost of fuel is no longer putting people off. Stronger Yen making importing more expensive. It's not the best time to buy.
