Who here owns a Subaru?

I've had ideas since I had my WRX, haha.

I'm incredibly tempted to get rid of EcuTek and go open source or aftermarket on the STi. Not scared of getting stuck in!

I'm not much of a mapper but I know the basics, I ran Megasquirt on my old Rover.

Aftermarket is unnecessary hassle and expense, especially as you can do speed density on the stock ECU if you really want to. You would need to get the ECU unlocked by an ECUTek dealer though

Yeah, aftermarket wouldn't be my first choice.

Can you remove EcuTek from 05 STi ECUs though? I've read that the 16 bit ECUs can't be reverted. I'd probably buy a spare and keep my EcuTek ECU for when I screw something up anyway.

Yea, it just needs someone with the ECUTek hardware/software to do so, unless you're brave enough to do a bench recovery flash then you can do it yourself AFAIK

Ahhh that's good to know.

I'm definitely going to get a tactrix cable in the new year though. Once I've moved and get the car in the garage, I'll feel much more comfortable about messing with the ECU.

Do it, I used tactrix for over 4 years on my wrx and loved playing with it.

I remember yours brendy, blue WRX bugeye with STi Prodrive projector headlights and STi scoop. Do you still have it?

@Frozennova, I take it you have a copy of the stock map from your dad's car?

Also, as far as I understand it, an EcuTek map is locked to each mapper. So if my car was mapped by JGM, it would have to be a completely new map if I took it to another EcuTek mapper for a tweak/tune.

I have a few copies of his stock map dotted around just in case

I think you're right, your license stays with the ECU but the map itself is locked to a tuner. Drop me a message on FB if there's anything you wanna know, easier than cluttering the forum with rambling

Thanks very much, I'll be in touch a bit closer to the time.

Like I said, I do have a bit of experience from messing about with Megasquirt on the Rover but unfortunately that car never saw a road tune... Not because I couldn't do it, hah. The car was on a mate's driveway and started to get the wrong attention so it had to go :(

It's more the EJ20 specific stuff (what ignition timing I can run etc) that I'll need advice on but appreciate the offer.

Sold it Sept last year when I broke the gearbox going a bit too enthusiastically from 1st to 2nd, bought an e60 530d Msport... nice big comfy car but I really want back into an impreza. cant stop looking at blob sti's etc :( I definitely regret selling especially as I get to see it every now and again with its shiny bodywork that the new owner sorted.

Will kill me having to drive it like a daisy. Be like when Andy made me go 3mph all the way down to santapod, killer....

Yeah I've never done that...

Black WRX I had the clutch done and went straight to Santa Pod the same week! Several launches that day :D

Blue STi got launched from the day I bought it - when it had a clutch (didn't need one I just did it) - I booted it same day and launched it the next :D

Anyone got experience with wheel spacers? Have bought some springs for the car and I think the wheels are going to look a little lost. Wouldn't mind bringing them out 10-15mm.

Hubcentric is a must, it seems 10mm are replacement studs, 15mm are the kind that bolt to the hub and then wheel bolts to that.

You'd be surprised, you may not need the spacers, never ran any on my old car and was happy with how it looked. However, you're right hubcentric is a must.

Anyone clued up on coolant / antifreeze?

My coolant reservoir is at low, and is/has been filled with pink coolant and antifreeze premix in the past.

Inside the radiator itself its full - and the coolant is luminous green colour.

Does this sound correct or not?

I ordered some Xtreme G30 to top it up but now im wondering if the reservoir should also be green?

Or do i just top up reservoir with distilled water?

Im so confused :p

Comma G30 is the correct stuff

Launching straight out of the garage it is then.

The coolant reservoir and radiator should be the same fluid as it's the same system.

Sounds very much like the Motul Inugel stuff that I use which is pink in the bottle but looks green when in the car.

Haha, it's not so bad buying it once every 5 years.

What does sting a bit is when you order Inugel Expert, flush and fill your car with it... Only to realise it's the wrong one and you should have bought Inugel Optimal instead!
