Guys, I have a 2004 Legacy 2.5 auto (presumably JDM as I'm in NZ) that's stuck in 3rd gear and manual mode doesn't seem to override. If I turn the engine off for a while and try again it's fine, but as soon as the revs get higher the SPORT light starts blinking and it's stuck in 3rd.

I can't find an OBD2 port. Any ideas how I can get a fault code without taking it to a garage? Hoping it's just a sensor...

I would like to think that's a solenoid in the box. It should have an obd port could possibly be located right hand side of drivers steering wheel? I can't see them having changed it from 2004 to the later models.

So we found the OBD2 port and pulled these codes.

Codes -
P0733 - gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0734 - gear 4 incorrect ratio
P1718 - AT CAN communition circuit

And the gear oil looks like it's never been changed. One local guy says it's new gearbox time. (New car time really as it wasn't expensive).

Would you agree?

Change gearbox oil, change solenoid if you can get it cheap and go from there I guess.

Where is the solenoid? Is it a gearbox out job? Can you help me find a part number?

My gearbox code is TZ1B7LFAAA

I'd imagine the solenoid to be in the box but I'm not sure if it's a gearbox out job as I only have some experience with merc boxes and I think they were gearbox out.

You could ring up the guys mightycarmods use on YouTube. I'm sure they were subie specialists and ask? They're based in aus.

Bingo, caliper bolt didn't take too kindly to me hanging off it with a breaker bar and the head decided to detach itself from the rest of the bolt.

I also seem to have developed an impressive boost leak that sounds as though I'm running an external wastegate. Sounds so good I'm tempted to leave it as is

is there much difference between aftermarket hoses such as RCM / PERRIN / MISHIMOTO

Well it turns out it was hose clip that had snapped. so was a costly fix with the recovery and labour/new coolant

Could be worse. Could be an older model BMW where the coolant system is all super brittle plastic

Been looking at the 330S impreza’s hatch lately, really like the look on them, but looking at the prices which seems to be the same price for the older blob and Hawkeye STI’s, I’m assuming they’re not that good of a car?

If my commute reduces one day, I’d like to see myself in either an Impreza or Forester STi

Probably explains why it holds less value than the older cars.

What about the forester STi, that uses the same 2.5 engine? Do they come with the same chocolate issue or have the japs beefed up their version cause everything JDM is almighty
