Who here owns a Subaru?

Seems scoobies need them more often though :p

Hmmm i don't know i definitely prefer the look of a blob eye scoobie but £6k isn't going to get anything worth while....

£4-5k seems to get a very nice older scooby STI though.

Admiral have quoted me £890 for a old STI. My insurer greenlight said i will have to wait till January to get i quote from them (im 25 in jan)

So a Scoobie STI and a Evo 5-6 are on the list.

It's a turbo charged performance car that is quite old now. People tend to rag them hard without warming them up etc. On top of that many of them run mods without having them mapped causing the issues also.

Don't be fooled because you hear of people killing the engines. The biggest killer on the old engines is the oil pump. Ensure it has been replaced/upgraded when the cambelt has been done and it won't be an issue.

You'll get a Blobeye STi for £6k - but it's going to be as the cost of mileage and overall condition. Definitely doable though.

I really love the looks of the classic STI's but for me i'd want it to have the big brembo brakes from the later STi (the classic brakes really are terrible) and probably the 6 speed 'box but once you've done that you may as well just get a newage and have a newer car with all that stuff as standard even if it is heavier.

Why not just get a mint WRX blob eye for the money, a tactrix and have some fun tuning it yourself instead. Will get stock STI performance and this would be a step up from your ST220..

Anybody know anything about the Subaru Impreza 2000 turbo? Things such as running costs, what needs replacing how often, common problems etc

Too much hassle, rather just get a mint STI. Will only get one if i can find a nice sonic blue one.

Isn't the WRX a massive step down from the WRX STI? Especially in the bug/blob and hawk eye scoobs.

father in law has basically owned all of them :D

i prefer the earlier models and they seem to feel quicker. used to love his early wagon :( now has a 320rbr with few mods on.

Had a lucky escape yesterday, noticed steam coming from the scoop on my way to work in the morning, had a look after work...the header tank was empty but that's not unusual for my car (had a few coolant problems). Topped the tank up, ran the engine and all seemed ok, did notice the engine was idling much faster than normal.

Halfway to my mechanic and the temp gauge keeps going up and up, I always keep 2ltr of tap water in the boot since my previous problems and that most probably saved my engine on this day, dumped all 2ltr in and made it to the garage as quickly as possible while trying to keep off boost.

The coolant hose entering the turbo had split so it was quick fix....I could just do without panic like this on a Friday. If you are in or near Darlington and want a mechanic, you can't go wrong with Darren at DLM!

List of coolant problems this car has been having my life with for the last couple of years; Heater matrix, radiator, turbo lower hose and turbo upper hose now...can't be much left to fail. It's an RB5 with forged 2ltr engine and TD05-20G, FMIC, old simtek etc

Very reliable, normal car running costs to be honest. Biggest issue on the classics is the oil pump failure, rear arches rot a little bit too. Not a lot goes wrong on them otherwise if well maintained and not modified.

They do have a surprisingly different driving experience. Mainly because the newage WRXs are probably underpowered for their weight and the STi is about right but has the shorter ratios to help it feel more exciting!

A WRX with some simple mods, exhaust, air filter, remap & lowering springs is a completely different experience to a standard WRX. Feels so much more alive, but then again... so does the STi.

Glad you caught it in time, coolant leaks with these rubber pipes is all too common as the pipes get hard and crack easily.

The classic STI's really seem to be on the decline. Hardly see any real ones about these days.

Yeah you can make the WRX look and sound the dogs ******, but it still ain't a STI is it. Something in me as always preferred the highest class of what ever car I own.

I think if I can find a sonic blue STI, I will pick it over a evo 5-6 (still haven't had a solid quote on a evo yet)

Insurance on Imprezas for under 25s who are people using?

22, 2yr ncb for reference.

Thinking of A blob/bugeye WRX late next year, best quote at the moment is admiral @ £1800

So far I've tried
A-plan
Green light
Keith Michales
and Chris knott.

Greenlight won't touch me as I'm under 25, A-Plan wont insure me unless I've owned something 250bhp+ and RWD for a year and I'm still waiting for a call back from Keith Michaels

Had a good chat with A-plan, while I was on the phone with them, she said that she'd be able to near half admirals quote if I'd owned the car a year.

Option 2 would be scratch my Soarer itch for 12 months which would mean specialists would be a bit happier to insure me as Soarers only come out at around £200 more than Im paying at the moment,.

EDIT: Also are you running CarberryROM on yours or still on the original? and does Duncan map Carberry

I wouldn't run Carberry unless I had a lot of time/money to waste getting it right.

There's only 2 mappers (that I know of) that do Carberry officially. One of them is not Duncan ;)
