Probably not technically the best, but I'd say Brian May for me personally.

I was tempted to say Mark Knopfler or Cash, but May probably tips it.

Choosing just the one is difficult; all have their merits.
I think for me it boils down to a choice between McLaughlin and Coxon. I'm going to go with Graham Coxon, because I feel he's the most interesting and creative guitarist of the last 20 or so years.

Brian May for me, then Dave Gilmour. Have recently discovered Pink Floyd since Live8. Also have bought Gilmour's new album and seen the Radio 2 gig online.

So the full order, in my mind has to be:
Brian May
Dave Gilmour
Mark Knopfler
Paul McCartney
Jimmy Page

I was very tempted to say Joe Satriani but I can't listen to some of his stuff its just so.... cheesey! (One big rush anyone? :/)

So if you dragged me kicking and screaming to say one... I'd proberly go for.... meh... errr... mmmmm....

Matt Bellamy - Some of his riffs are just to die for. However, I'm taking pre-'I'm going to get really lazy and use effects on everything' Matt, ie on the Hullaballoo DVD.

Bah if I could fit 2 different dimminshed chords into a chorus and make it sound good, I'd be happy :p
