Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Minimum will be 40mpg motorway, maximum I have seen on a good run is 46.5 mpg in the GTI.

I can get 40mpg out of my 2008 2.5 litre Z4 on the motorway.
What are you getting around town/country road driving?
That’s the real figure.

I will be test driving one on Monday ... depending on how it goes. I might order one to replace my Mk7 R.

Would be keen to hear your thoughts as I've had a Mk7 Golf R since 2015 and was considering whether to trade it in for something newer.

I'm not really sure what to replace it with (or even if I sure replace it) as now there are loads of very similar cars out there for the same price with equivalent pace. Specifically :-

Mk8 Golf R
Audi S3
BMW M135
Mercedes A35

The weird thing is the Golf on paper is actually more expensive than many of the other premium competitors! I guess this is probably partly due to the Golf having slightly more power and a more advanced 4WD (with front and rear differentials) compared to the others but it's still odd. In fact that's one thing that annoys me about the Golf in that the moment you spec Lapiz Blue metallic paint (which is a must IMO) it pushes you over the £40,000 luxury car tax bracks and effectively adds around another £1500 in cost/road tax over the next 5 years :(

Also it's a bit annoying that so many useful, essentially software, features like the nurburgring mode setting and preventing the gearbox automatically changing up at the rev limiter required you to pay extra for the performance pack. Doubly so as I don't really want the large 19" alloys or the larger roof spoiler.

Have you test driven any of the above cars and/or are you considering anything else as an alternative to the MK8 Golf R?

I have had my Golf R new since 2016 , just got a bit of a itch to see what is out there or ill keep it for another year and see what comes out.

If I was going for the Mk8 R , it would be almost fully specced out. But I would go for white still. The lapiz blue doesn't do anything for me. Deals can be had and my desired spec is coming out at £39.6K after discounts on the usual DTD site.

I have test driven the A35 in that list you have there sometime in back 2019. The A35 was the Aero Pack one but without the adaptive dampers. I prolly would have gone for it , but at the current time the pricing wasn't where I wanted. It didnt feel any quicker than my current R , in fact it felt slower. The ride was ok and the interior was pretty nice.

The Audi S3 just looks a bit naff on the outside , prolly a lot worse than the previous model. Also you have to spec with the Vorspung model to have the adaptive dampers, making it a lot more than the R. I would have gone with the previous S3 but the Golf R come in at a much better spec and price at the time.

I have already test driven the Clubsport and it didn't really impress me to be honest. Sure once going it was fast, but im too used to the sure-footedness of the R. The interior is prolly the worst part of the car but having said that, the best thing was the pops and crackles on the exhaust.

The other weird option , would be a newer version of the i30N with an auto box with the AWD, however not really seen any more information about it.

I suppose the aesthetics are all in the eye of the beholder really but I personally think the new A3 looks great externally. I'm less keen on the interior design but the interior quality is undoubtedly better than the Golf. That is one thing which annoys me about the S3 in that I also would prefer active dampers on any car I buy but you can't get them on their own without spending around £8k extra on the upgraded S3 trim level!

I looked at the GTI/Clubsport but I like the extra grip and traction 4WD provides so don't really want to back to a FWD car especially when the price difference between the GTI Clubsport and R is relatively small in the scheme of a £40k motor.

I believe the "luxury car tax" bracket is based on list price so even if you manage to negotiate the price you pay below £40k you'll still end up having to pay the ~£500 p/a road tax for the first 5 years.

That Hyundai sounds like an interesting option, and I didn't realise they'd planned a more powerful 4WD variant, but I'm guessing the price will be similar to the other VAG/Mercedes/BMW cars. Be interesting to see if it's competitive with the usual suspects.

Someone who has Diesels and VW's most of their life mentioned to me that my fuel pump seems to be "humming" away abnormally loud, he has a Passat with the same engine and according to him his is barely audible in comparison. Trying to determined whether or not it's normal.

I had an Audi A3 before this which made no noise of this nature and I was under the impression they are almost identical setups.

Anyone with a MK 7/7.5 notice the fuel pump hum as being quite intrusive or is it quiet?

Car currently has warranty and will no doubt always have warranty during my ownership so not to concerned but don't want to go down that route if it's completely normal.

As in - audible from inside the cabin? I don't have any undue noise but if you can be more specific about the noise I'd be happy to help establish whether it's normal.

I have experience with broken high pressure fuel pumps leading to eye watering repair bills when they give up (it sends swarf through the entire fuel system). BMW quoted me over £7k when it happened to a one series a while back. Not to be dramatic, but if it was me and there is a noise, I'd definitely get it looked at.

Thanks Ed - Trying to think of how best to explain this issue.

When I turn the ignition on you hear the fuel pump prime/pressurise followed by a steady humming noise which is intrusive and loud it almost drones on you above the engine note and when you turn the ignition off it remains for a second then goes off which again makes you realise how loud it really is.

I feel like as I approach 2k Revs it eases off and then when off throttle remains. I will check if it continues whilst Stop/Start is activated. The guy who pointed it out to me gave me a detail explanation but cannot recall word for word but I must admit only the other day I mentioned to my dad how it sounds like lots is going on when ignition is on and he said "Oh that'll be the fuel pump"

I did mention it to where I bought it and even went down and Sat in two other GTD's where it wasn't as audible but as the cars were inside and the engine was amplified so even the guy there said hard to tell but he could hear it and wasn't sure "How loud is too loud" etc

Waiting to hear back from them today as this was Sunday, I will ensure they look at it as I am warrantied until June (Which the plan is to piggy back with VW cover as my luck is pants)
the car only has 17,000 miles.

Edit: I can try get a video and hopefully it pics up the sound on my lunch break

I paid the balloon payment on my 7.5 GTD last week. Decided just to keep the car as it's be flawless for 3 years.
Final payment was £8830 and they're on Autotrader for about £15k with the same mileage.

This any use? I should have let it run for a while then turned it off really.

I have listened closely and believe I can hear it, the best way I can describe it that it’s a constant droning humming sound which also continues for a few second when the ignition is switched off. It can be heard when I stand outside the car towards my fuel filler cap.

Seems to be the case that it’s normal for a fuel pump to hum but it’s one of those where how loud is in fact normal? I have been in quite a few diesels and never heard this sound.

I will try and get a video of my start up and identify the sound I can hear. Unfortunately myself and my partners iPhone have the dying speaker and it’s struggling with the audio on camera, what are the odds.

Thank you for taking the time to take this video it’s appreciated!
