Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

I really really really want a new R but I just can't justify the hassle of going to bed every night wondering if that's the night my window will be crowbar'd open.

I have listened closely and believe I can hear it, the best way I can describe it that it’s a constant droning humming sound which also continues for a few second when the ignition is switched off. It can be heard when I stand outside the car towards my fuel filler cap.

Seems to be the case that it’s normal for a fuel pump to hum but it’s one of those where how loud is in fact normal? I have been in quite a few diesels and never heard this sound.

If you can hear it then thats good news at least - either that or we're both very unfortunate ;) I have to say I genuinely cannot hear anything abnormal but then I'm no expert thats for sure!

I'll have a listen near the filler cap next time I'm in the car and see if I can hear what you mean - and I'll pay attention when I turn the car off.

I'm sure this goes for any car of that calibre but still - I totally understand the concern. Those pesky theives, saving you a bloody fortune!

Looking to change car from a 16 Focus ST.

Not really sure what to go for but wondering if the Golf R would be worth a look.

Would be pre-owned, budget of roughly £20k I think, what could I expect for that?

Any advice or recommendations appreciated!

*Also to add it will be used with the family in tow, so I'm assuming I have to go 5 door really? Do prefer the look of a 3 but imagine that's just not practical? Any one using one with a small family and can comment on that.

What are to nice extras to look out for on an R that were options from new?

Sorry for all the questions, they look really nice. That blue is beautiful

It's not an R but a 3dr GTI. We have a little un that'll be 4 in a few months and it's been no issue for me taking her to creche/school and picking her up.
Granted she wasn't in the back much when she was little (we'd use the Qashqai) but when she was it was OK. I didn't want a 5dr when I bought the car :)

Thanks for the reply! Similar case, we have a 5 year old... But also an almost 2 year old too. I think I would kind of have to go with the 5 door? :(

I've had my Golf R for about 5 years now and it's awesome. Would definitely recommend one.

In terms of price best bet is to enter the details in to Autotrader and have a search

Not with the new 8R , Keyless is standard :D

That's handy. Now the thieves just need to get within range of your key, boost/relay the signal and drive off. No crowbar required!

Have the manufacturers done anything to fix the problems with keyless thefts or is it still an issue?

Yes. Key fobs that go to "sleep" and stop sending a signal when they're not moving around.

Unsure if the MK8 Golf has this technology. Anybody know?

I have keyless on my 7R , but I just stick my keys in a faraday pouch.

Not sure if they have done anything with the Mk 8 Golfs keys , I know on the later Ford ones if there is no movement on the keys, the wireless shuts down until there is movement on the keys.

Might be about to get a Mk7.5 R but either a high miler or a basic spec one , or a decent specced Mk7.0 R with some decent options for £20K. upto 16 - 66 and some 17 Reg ones will be the Mk7. 17 onwards will be the Mk7.5

I have a 5 year old and a 0 year old and have the 5 door version of the R , if you also have a young family , get the 5 door.

The nice options to look out for are the Adaptive Dampers (DCC) and the Pretoria alloys ... but options are subjective and depends on you. Mines pretty loaded.

Thanks for the replies.

Can I ask what's the main difference between the 7 and 7.5? Is it a Big deal?

Thanks again

Main difference is the Mk7.5 will have the virtual dash , different front bumper and lights , also the rear bumper diffuser and rear lights . Interior is slight different along with the infotainment system. 10 more BHP than the Mk7, but the same if you go for a GPF version. Plus many many other differences. Different paints , alloy options etc etc.

Is it a big deal ? The differences didn't make me want to get a 7.5 after owning the 7.

Likewise, mostly stuff that's nice to have but nothing major. For £20k it might get your a better car by going for a Mk7 as I think you'll be looking at significant higher mileage examples if you want a Mk7.5 for that price.

Thanks for all that info. Just browsing Autotrader etc makes it all a bit hard to differentiate between models, but this helps!

Yeah I feel the same! I can stretch a bit more if it's worth it but don't want to go mad
