Who owns a Mondeo ST220 / ST TDCI?

Some people on the ford website say the new dealer part is superior and should last the life of the car.

The problem i found is there is no support bracket from the cat to about the first silencer on the main exhaust (cat back) so the flexi is holding it up. I think thats why they tend to blow more oftern then they should as they're holding the weight.

my flexi had already been welded by the previous owner so it can be done, i was just usless at getting it in the right position :p

the original flexi, and the universal one

chopping the old one up

test fitting before welding

both sides tac welded just to get the right position

didn't fit, went back repositioned a few times, then on the 4th go, MIG welded it but it was still off :(

new part from Ford

How little it was off >.<

How come between offering it up initially, and welding it you were so far out? You should have marked it up with a paint pen when in correct position then ensured you kept it all aligned when back on the bench. Not sure how you managed to rotate it so much :(

JP exhaust's never seem to update their website as they have been mentioning a special deal on their Mondeo exhausts for like a year now. When I enquired they quoted me £500 ish which I believe is their usual price? Got my eye on a JP exhaust for the ST if they go on sale in the New Year. JP don't seem to update their website much (although they have updated the frontpage to mention how long they're closed for over the festive period), so is there any way to know when they have a sale on other than phoning them up?

My ST has also started making a funny noise today which I have a video clip of if it helps. It's a groaning noise that only happens at idle and not under load. The moment you blip the throttle it goes away only to return once the revs settle. You can hear it groaning a little at the start of the video clip, die away when the throttle is blipped and then return when it settles back into an idle.

Any ideas? :(

Idle air control valve, most probably.

Mine sort of whines when i hoof it, sort of like a super charger,

I just presumed it was the alternator on its way out but its lasted 2 years, seems its a common noise that some people get and some dont.

Cant find a definate answer on google either :p

I finally managed to get the new front bumper fitted and the front end is now immaculate. Just need to give it a wash / wax this week before putting it on the market :(

Prices are going up, up and up on these. Going by eBay/Auto trader my car should be worth around 4-4.5k. 1k increase from about 2-3 months ago.

My 220 hasn't been driven for over a month and probably only been driven about 3-4 times in the last 3 months. Just rate cannot be arsed with selling or ****ing about with the private plate though... lazy. Just completely lost interest in cars or anything car related.

Don't be fooled by the silly prices being charged by traders on AT etc nobody is buying them. It took me 2 months to sell my mint 220 back in August and in the end I had to let it go for 2.6k a "2004 with 93k on". There are still a few for sale now that were listed 4/5 months ago when I was selling mine.
Think the popularity of the 220 peaked last year when the prices shot up but with the fresher looking mk4 being so cheap now people have lost interest.
How come you haven't driven yours much?
I Would just keep it! I miss mine not even my Focus ST is as good and it cost me twice as much as I got for my 220 :( the n/a engine is so smooth and the leather Recaro's are the best seats I've been in.
Damn u Ford for not making a mk4 Mondeo ST :p

Ah I don't know. Mines blue which holds a premium, FSH, loads of paper work, refurbed alloys and suspension etc etc.

Think where you struggled was you had no service history at all which pretty much kills the sale price / interest on any car.

I just don't need it, I get picked up for work every morning and got a van at work I can use when I want.

Yes good point yours has had a lot done to it and is the colour everyone wants.
With u spending so much money on it, it makes sense to just keep it as u know it wants for nothing and what u will get for selling the car won't be enough to buy anything as good in the future.
It's worth keeping just to have a blast in at the weekend :D

Idle air control valve, most probably.

I think this is the culprit after some investigation. Got one on order and a new gasket to go with it.

Is there any possibility that a faulty idle air control valve could result in a strong smell of fumes from the car? Like it's running rich or something? The ST has started smelling strongly of fumes lately and I'm unsure if this is the problem or I've got a bigger hole in my exhaust somewhere.....

This car really gets me down sometimes. It's just been one thing after another since I bought it. Over the last year and a bit I've hardly had a period of more than about 2 months at a time without something going wrong. :(

I self service mine, i paid £2700 2 years ago, for what i'll get back for it i'll probably just strip it, sell bits like the nav unit and seats and turn it into a cheap track car.

Tbh i love it and got no plans to sell atm, it'll be having another couple of track days next year too :)

I've done no research at all into it, but I've always fancied doing this when I move it on if I can't get decent money for it. I would have thought in terms of clutch and tyre wear it's still going to be fairly expensive to track?

Done 3 days so far, my st220 is bog standard with no modifications at all.

It runs fine and is pretty fun, no engine over heating or power steering overheating(common in my s14 (really need a power steering cooler :p))

The standard st220 clutch is pretty heavy duty so i think it'll take a bit of abuse before it goes.

I burn through a set of brembo pads with about 2000miles left after a track day but i push hard out there and they only cost £26 on ecp.
i usually change my oil every january as part of my service and a couple of weeks after a track day. (I use shell helix)

Ill be doing a full major service this or next month including coolant and brake fluid change which ill no doubt have something to write about.

*edit* tyre wear, if u keep traction control on you'll shred your fronts as the car wont let you carry speed around bends, turn it off and you'll get a smoother ride on track.

I changed all 4 of mine in june, when I bought the car it had brand new tyres on the front so 2 track days and estimated 9000 miles driving isn't too bad.

atm my fronts are about half worn and rears still have tons of tread, that's with 1 track and estimated 5000miles.

Think you just jinxed my car. Needed to use it this morning and its rough up to 3rd and no power at all in the high gears.

Will get it on live test tonight and see what's up.

Hopefully just the breather hose, but will end up being something like the fuel pump being on its last legs.

EDIT: breather hose is split, nearly split into 2. Cheaper than a fuel pump so all good :p

:p at least it's a cheap fix. Mine was the Same when I took it out looked like someone had cut it in two. Mine put the engine management light on though and an error code. It ran really well once it was changed.

Where did you get your breather hose from? I need a breather hose and a PCV hose for mine and the cheapest I can find online is £84 delivered for the two.

edit: Part numbers

4461858
4779447

Really annoying cause I don't need a full PCV hose, just the rubber shoulder has gone on mine. Maybe get a used one from ebay....

£35 on fordpartsuk for the breather.

Edit guessing you looked on there already as that's a similar price for both inc shipping on there.

Yeah they were my cheapest price for both parts. Ended up getting them ordered from my local main dealer as it's only 2 quid more

As i was putting the bin out noticed my hearlight washer cover was missing, a bit ****ed off but i'll get over it.

When i started the car i got a security warning, i think they tried to break in.

When i got to work, noticed all my jackinh covers are missing; my ariel, rear wiper.

Because its raining i cant see the bodywork, im hoping it hasn't been keyed..

Grrrrr..... I hate people!!
