I'm upgrading from an 8600GT to a 5850. Will I notice a difference?
Er...
No mate not really.

ATI's biggest most revolutionary graphics card was the 9700 Pro, other revolutionary cards are the 3dfx Voodoo 1 and Nvidia Geforce 256.
I think in order it would be:You need to add the 8800 GTX to that list and IMHO this should sit right at the top.
The 58xx could join that list when we get some indication of performance in DX11. After all it is the first DX11 card that also performs great in 10 & 9. Reminds me of the 8800 GTX.

3dfx Voodoo 1
Geforce 8800GTX
Radeon 9700 Pro
Geforce 256
The HD5870 could join this list, in time.
Yes but the Voodoo 1 transformed PC graphics overnight and made the biggest difference ever to the quality of PC in-game graphics. I still rate the 8800GTX as the best card I've ever owned though.Voodoo 1 was pretty short lived. The GTX on the other hand is still going strong and holding its own how many years down the line?? To me this is what makes the GTX such a great card.
