why all the hate for hs2?

It's pretty incredible no one has spoken to Andy Burnham about what the heck is going on and by all accounts is as in the dark as everyone else. I can't even get my head around how dysfunctional the Tories have become that they're too scared to talk with the major of a city.

It looks weak and petty.

Blaming inflation. Ministers say they have plan to tackle inflation. Half the party want TAX cuts to stay in office. The main aim of HS2 gone. What next? dial back yet more public services?

I thought the last reshuffle was meant to solve the glaring problems in the party and pull the nation in a single and concise direction. The Conservative party isn’t filling me with confidence and they’ve been a long way off delivering on mandates going back to Cameron. Truss, Brexit, HS2, energy, environment all really damaging and serious economic failures with long term implications.

Another aspect of this debacle that's really annoying me at the moment is the sheer lack of leadership and transparency shown by the government.

There are rumours in every media outlet and it seems pretty clear that behind the scenes a decision has been made... and yet there is no 'official' announcement. No official spokesperson to actually gove us the respect to sya it to our face, or any ministers willing to own it and explain the decision.

I fully expect the "official" announcement will be made by Sunak or one of the others from the cabinet of junk in a GB News interview where a sitting Tory MP will be asking the pre approved questions from the script that has been written by the PR bods.

Keir Starmer procrastinating on what he would do - if it's cancelled he will (like oil wells) just say we'll present contractors with consistent strategy as opposed to reversing it,
although, he knows there would have been inadequate funding w/o ramping national gdp to debt ratio.

the swiss made a 35 mile tunnel through a mountain for 11Billion British Pounds x 11.4 and you could get from london to Edinburgh for about what the HS2 is supposed to be costing..

About the best quote I've seen on this:

"Complex infrastructure projects always hit some problems. Smart people get round the table to solve them – they don’t run away"

That was from the former boss of Siemens.

Not at todays prices, also we did do HS1 for 7billion just under with is 68 miles long. Something else is wrong here.

Oh good, Euston is saved - I'm sure that won't rub salt in the wounds. And all of the money to be reinvested into regional projects? Now why do I have a hard time believe that?

Edit - and as I've just seen in the comments. The monies are from loand leveraged against future income right? I just don't believe £36bn is going to be put into the Midlands and North, that's a vast sum of money.

If they were going to spend 36bn on the north they'd be going ahead with the hs2 links.

Its almost over 400million per mile now

Just don't look at the Lower Thames Crossing... 14.5 miles of new road for £9Bn...

It'll be something like £36bn put into the midlands and north over a 40 year period.

Absolute charlatans this lot.

Which will translate into a few new junctions that the building of will cause misery for drivers while they are being built.

The guy who managed some of HS1 (e: r4 today this am) said one of the problem with HS2 (vs that and sncf) was that the budget was announced, and then surprisingly the contractors managed to use it,
versus a less transparent bidding option.
He didn't say this, but maybe there was criminal co-operation between bidders .. you can have that and I'll do this

I vividly remember some bod on LBC breakfast around 5/6 years ago saying the north to Birmingham leg would never get built. He said the only way to guarantee it got built was to start it in Manchester (cos they'd never scrap the london section, despite the london bits costing a hell of a lot more).

I think virtually everyone knew this was going to happen.

Our planning laws need a total rewrite. We allow too much churn on decision making that requires endless work for consultants and lawyers leading to endless judicial reviews and legal challenges. All this makes the engineering choices less optimal. It's not magic it's politics. Someone needs to face up to the unpopularity
