Why does DU Meter show constant dl and uploading?

wpa on these routers seems to be a bit flaky - tried it on mine and it kept dropping out... switched back to 128 bit wep and its been fine since.

thats with the latest firmware, and driver.

ive actually changed from the netgear usb adaptor now - discovered my laptop had a mini pci slot and antenna wires so i bought an intel 2915 a/b/g card!
 
Is there any chance you can take a print screen of cmd > netstat -a this way we can all see if there is anything connected to the outside world.

Thats a bit of a strange one? I've only ever had problems with wep with these routers, i've got v1 and my mates have v2 and i've found that both had problems with wep, had to use wpa to get the network secure, but this is with other adaptors that are of different brand. Sorry to go off topic.

never been with nildram but do you have a user area where you can see the daily usage? If you do, check that and see if it ties up with the figures that DU Meter is giving you.
 
Task Manager -> Processes Tab

View-> Select Columns

Tick I/O Read Bytes, I/O Write Bytes and I/O Other bytes

Click OK - you should then see if there's a continuous stream of bytes... It will show the processes accessing files, network etc as the numbers will change.
 
Try netstat -a

Dump a screenshot here. When you are doing it, kill everything not required, and be doing as little on the Internet as possible or there will be a v.long list :p
 
heres a thought... just rip out the patch lead from your ethernet port...

does dumeter still show the same figures, even when the interface is down?

Hi all and thanks for the help. Just pulled the cable and all dl/up stopped. Plugged it back in and its better at least its not at the mo contstantly dling/upping.

I dont think its fixed yet, but for now its ceased. Im going to investigate further when I get in from work tonight. Wtf can be causing this? :confused:

Yeah its defnitaly stopped activity. :) maybe theres been a problem with my router and its been downloding and upping data for no apparent reason?

Anyway so far so good lol, thanks very much Atomiser for that sugestion. I havent a clue about ethreal etc, I have installed it and Im lost lol. ;)

I just turned off the pc and then turned it on and booted into windows and its started dl/upping again. Gonna pull the network cable to see if it solves it.. goddamit its doing it again? can I have a dodgy cable here??

I pulled it again and put it in a different port in the router seems to have stopped it now. :confused: Christ this is a nightmare.

Go to google and download and install "ethereal"

This will let you debug and view any traffic.

Get it installed first and we can help you use it - its not hard to use at all just afew clicks.

Basically, open etherreal, chose capture, then interfaces, ull see a list of NIC's then. One will be sending and received bytes i presume, so click Capture for this.

Let it capture data for 1 or 2 mins, then click stop.

You can now view the traffic, and even recreate the sessions.

Probs best posting a screen shot of captured traffic.
 
Couldn't it just be high network broadcast? if there are other wireless AP's about - there could be attempted traffic to the router, which would only get repeated to the switch, or if there are authorised machines on the network, it could be traffic between them.

The traffic doesn't have to be going out to the internet.

The other option - would you have set a DMZ or any ports in your router to forward to your PC? - any external traffic through these options could result in traffic.

Pull the phoneline out and see if you still get traffic, if you do it's internal lan traffic and you need not worry about it.

yup thats the way to go... sod testing which traffic goes where... (with ethereal) do that once you know its internet traffic :D

Im sure the OP wants to know what the traffic is rather than ignoring it like you the previous 2 post suggests.

Using ethereal will allow the traffic to be identified and steps can be made to stop the source.

Taking out cables and swaping cables is a waste of time.
 
At least in the short term it will put his mind at rest that it's not counting towards his quota.
 
I'd install a software firewall, sygate personal firewall for instance and it'll ask you what you'd like to connect when the service / application requests it. Might help if it happens again :)
 
Hi all, I just got back from work. I have turned on the pc and it was quiet, no traffic then boom...

I treid unplugging the cable but it keeps coming back. I am not using the internet at all during this time. it shows as high as 5k a sec up and down and its really worrying me now. :(

Anyway I have installed ethreal, if anyone can tell me how to use it I will. I might also stop using the motherboards lan and stick in a wireless card to see if that helps any.
