Why does grated cheese taste better?

Yes indeed, it tastes worlds better. I have to great twice as much cheese when making lasagne, I scoff mouthfulls of it. It's by sheer will alone I'm not forced to go out and buy another block.

I do this too. When I live at home I get chased from the kitchen for eating grated cheese when pasta was being made or whatever.

This one time, at band camp, I was sat in front of the gogglebox one afternoon when my Mum came in with the weekly shopping and then went out again to potter about somewhere else.

I promptly obtained the jar of Branston and the block of cheese that she had returned with, along with a cheese knife and a plate and returned to the TV where I then ate the whole lot!

I think the block was > 1Kg too! Whoops.
 
I think it's something to do with the air in between the pieces of cheese.

Not that I know anything, of course. :o;)
 
all dpends on the cheese. i like a bit of cheese me. quite partial. some cheese doesn't grate well at all - im talkin belgian smoked cheese... mmm!!!!

dairylea doesnt grate either. well, you can try.

Winnar! Same as anything grated, inner flavours are more erm flavoursome? then the outer.
 
I always thought it was because grating the cheese releases more flavour, not just because of greater suface area but because of the friction against the cheese when one partakes in grating.
