Will Smith hits Chris Rock on Oscars stage

So many different takes over the same event which basically boil down to either -

Comedian attacked on stage after joke.

or

Smith defends wife's honour after bad taste joke.

I'm quite surprised that so many people who like to proclaim their progressiveness are seemingly happy for a man to steal a strong female's thunder by resorting to physical violence rather than watching Jada "fight her own battle".

Hell even media like Guardian sees this the same way that I do, it was embarrassing for Will Smith to do this - https://www.theguardian.com/comment...ith-slapping-chris-rock-actor-serena-williams - although somehow a black man slapping another black man who made a joke is still being called the fault of "White Supremacy" by Forbes which must be a joke I think - https://www.forbes.com/sites/maiaho...-talk-about-the-system-that-helped-create-it/

Sadly in these times of "who do we trust" it's all too easy to believe that this could have been staged, by an organisation desperate to make itself relevant again after COVID, but I don't think it was. I really do think Smith, under immense pressure, just snapped.

I don't think it's a one-sided audience in support of his action, but without polling I don't think it matters.

On the point about it being fake or genuine, theoretically it could well be both such that they merely hoped it would illicit a reaction in someone they knew to have a short fuse.

People really think this wasn’t staged - geeze.

Will Smith has been trained as a boxer and if he wanted to hit him it would have been a good right hook .Not a girlie slap.

https://youtu.be/d9OOrF9MrmE

It doesn't matter if it was a slap or a right hook. It's still assault, still an offence. You do that to someone in a Pub or anywhere for that matter, and they catch you on CCTV, then that is all the evidence needed. If you let your primitive mind control you, then you are just that, and maybe being behind bars is the best place for you.

What Will Smith did is no different to being in a conference room with your work colleagues and deciding using physical violence is an acceptable response to what somebody said. That isn't acceptable - if I did that I would, and would expect to be, fired.

Obviously he's 'self-employed', but he was at a ceremony amongst his peers. There are plenty of actors who have been in the firing line of hosts over the years and I don't recall any resorting to physical violence.

If you think violence in an appropriate response then I'm glad I don't have colleagues as unhinged as you.

Its hardly the same thing is it. If it were a typical office then youd argue Rock saying what he said is gross misconduct lmao.

That's ultimately the issue for Smith, his wife still had a joke made at her expense but now he's also facing some form of punishment from the academy and scrutiny from his peers for his behaviour.

Which is hilarious considering what they "accept" from others. Im in no doubt that "Elvis" that gets released this year will be up for awards...lauded as a rock and roll star that dated 14 year old kids. Then you have Polanski etc convicted of rape yet cleaning up at the French version of Oscars for nominations.

What Smith did is small time compared to what some of them are up to.

That Forbes article! Absolutely incredible.

Some argue that this is not about Will Smith and Chris Rock being Black or Will Smith “setting Black people back.” This is about a much larger systemic issue rooted in white supremacist culture designed to police the behavior of Blacks amongst the who’s who in Hollywood and beyond. Respectability politics suggest that equity and fair treatment require that Black people — both inside and outside of Hollywood — conduct ourselves in a manner deemed acceptable to whites. Furthermore, expressing any emotion other than complacence, apathy, or agreeance directly violates those norms, disqualifying Black people from receiving the same equitable treatment that whites enjoy as a birthright. And sadly, there is a large group of Blacks who have internalized this toxic messaging.

Has anyone felt humiliation on a world stage?
No, but neither did Smith. Rock said: "Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it."

This is after she said she didn't care what people thought of her hair.

He laughed, and that would have been the end of it, no one would have even remembered the joke.

Hollywood is known for its impulsive behavior, often sickening behavior which is seen as progressive but really it's regressive..Logic, self control and reasoning is seen as old-fashioned and regressive, but that's what it means to be human.. Hollywood has an agenda to normalise impulsive animal behavior but its tearing the west apart, the USA faster than most..

With all the money they all have I'm surprised they haven't been told this buy their psychologists, maybe they're ignorant or maybe they're playing games with the public.

Either way, we all hate them...

A visage is not always an accurate reflection of ones feelings.

Of course it's the same thing. He's an actor, it's an award ceremony attended by actors, directors and writers in this industry. There's a code of conduct.

I didn't say Rock wouldn't be reprimanded either for what he said in my example, but I know Smith did not respond in an acceptable way and has only shown himself to be unhinged and not in control of his emotions.

So just because worse individuals have won awards before, it makes what Smith did, right? I don't see how Polanski is even relevant here. It's like saying you don't mind a bit of GBH because it isn't murder.

That Forbes article! Absolutely incredible.

It's hilarious, apparently being civilized is now "whiteness"...

This didn't have anything to do with race, it's just some celebrity at an event where celebrities can expect to be mocked a bit getting offended because of a fairly mild joke aimed at his wife. The idea that because she's a black woman and it's related to hair loss and therefore deserves special protection is ridiculous, it was maybe in bad taste, in the same way, mocking anyone's appearance can be, it wasn't necessarily a massively negative comparison - GI Jane was supposed to be an inspirational role model, it's not like she was compared to something heinous.

The idea that this is a black thing makes about as much sense as saying it's a male thing, you could just as easily write some worm-brained article about how women shouldn't expect certain standards of behavior of men and that it's toxic femininity to expect male compliance etc..

I expect these race takes would have been emphasising white privilege if a white actor had done the same thing; only a privileged white man could get up on stage and do that in full view of police and security then return to his seat confident that nothing would happen to him etc..

The reality is it is just a celebrity with a brused ego, nothing to do with his race or anything along those lines, just someone who can't control his emotions and feeling the need to react to this comedian on stage who has mocked him and his wife in the past too.

What is a bit ridiculous is this continued celebrity worship culture within Hollywood where they're basically treated like gods, there are police and security there but no one stopped him from getting on stage and no one arrested him or kicked him out after witnessing an obvious assault. That sort of culture has led to far worse things being left unchecked, abusers getting away with quite sick stuff both in Hollywood and back here in the UK at the BBC, treating the "talent" like gods and tiptoeing around them even when they do stuff like that is ridiculous.

Police hired for events ought to act independently not like private security, this again is a minor event but you can see how that attitude goes wrong when you have say police at that Astroworld festival in Texas where a rapper just carried on while members of the audience were being crushed to death. That attitude sucks too, just because someone or some organisation is paying big $$$$ for a police presence doesn't mean the police should suddenly become paid goons only acting on the whim or the production team.

Yet here was had an assault occur and someone could have been arrested at the time but the call on whether to do that isn't down the police officers at the venue but is a business decision on the part of some production team worried about how it might look or whether it would ruin the show if one of the main stars is dragged off in cuffs etc..

Agree there mate .

I took the article to either be satire or an attempt to deflect attention from the fact that wealth is the real disparity between whether someone breaking the law literally in full view of millions of people get's punished for it.

With inflation as high as it is such transparent displays of inequity is dangerous to say the least.
