Will the Mac end up becoming un-cool?

I have thought about running a 'hackingtosh' via VMware but i thought not only should i be legal, i want to actually have a mac to play with to get the full experiance

So just run OSX on your existing computer if that's all you want. It will cost a lot less than a new iMac/MBP/MM

And also causes a hell of a lot of hassle.

If you want OS X and get the *FULL* experience, get a mac.

If I thought a hackintosh was a decent replacement for a Mac Pro I would have got one, alas I didn't.

Reason i say that is

1.because when you receive any error messages Apple error messages are normally very good and tell you exactly what to do great for these users

2. OSX rarely goes wrong & all maintenance is automated (Windows only done that from vista really)

3.all programs are very simple to use & don't involve learning to do the simple things, but allows you to advanced things with very little knowledge.

4. Using the OS is very simple & requires very little knowledge.

prime example of this,
My Mum Never used Mac before Only used Windows once. (not even turned a pc on!) I gave her my Macbook to use for a while as she kept saying she wanted a laptop
she instantly turned it on herself & within 20 minutes she was on the internet browsing Google, Created a To-Do List & started looking at some Animal website about how to keep Turtles.

Now if she could do this on her own, first time using a computer ever, i say that a very good feat.

Specially when i let her use Windows Machine every 2 minutes she was how do I do this?

She now loves the Mac & wont let me use it. :(

But why does it stop at medium users? I'm scared I'm too good at computers for a Mac, I might have to switch to Windows :(

But what makes them market/sell in relatively small numbers? Is it to keep the coolness or is it because there isn't the market there at the price point to sell them in larger numbers? Apple have apparently still only got 5% of the world market share when it comes to PCs and that's a percentage that has stayed pretty static for a good many years. Some of the pricing leaves me baffled. The Mac Mini is expensive, the difference between the base 21.5" iMac with the 1 TB drive is only about £150 cheaper than the base 27" iMac yet you get all those acres of screen with the 27"?

It's more like 8-9% these days. It's certainly not staying static, it is slowly rising.

They don't price most of their products aggressively, computer wise at least. They are content with selling less units for higher profit. To be honest if you can do that, you're better off anyway - but you need to cultivate the right image and user base to do so, which they've done a good job of.

What I mean is they're chasing market share, but not at the expense of quality. That's what they say anyway.

it doesn't necessary need to.

its good for geek's to but not brilliant

geeks like to tweak mod things which can be generally little harder on osx, though times are changing.

i'm a geek and i find it perfect for my needs.

however casual/medium users just want it to work but most geeks want it to shine & run at its peak from the usual geekiery so its fine for geeks to ive learned so much from using a mac.

imagine it in the car world
its like a car most people would buy a normal saloon say a ford Nissan or such for easy of use etc.
but us geek's would buy a slightly different car then change certain components to push it to its peak.

i would say i'm a geek i got fed up with vista moved to apple osx and love how it just works its a nice break.

im 33% win7 33% osx & 33% Linux

however if i had to choose just one, i would have to pick osx for the easy of use :)

Brilliant. The Windows fanatic now advocates breaking a licence agreement.

I'm not a Windows fanatic - have you forgotten I actually own a Mac? I think the hardware is second to none, expensive but good. As for OSX v W7 well I prefer W7, there's nothing I would want to take from OSX and add to W7. As Apple like to say W7 just works.

I agree with that but only in once sense. Windows gives you better customisation and tweak-ability from a users perspective in regards to it being available in UI form somewhere in Windows settings.

But, OS X is just as tweak-able through command line. So yeah, Apple control that sort of stuff from the user, but those who want to go and look for a way out of that control, it is there baked into the operating system for all to use if they wish to learn how to use it.

very true, however some of us wait for others to find it & use a guide on how to do it :P

No he won't, he can use a different keymap.

faustus - I can send you a keymap and instructions on where to put it, or you can google for it.

Thanks for the offer, however, there is a nice little download HERE that works a treat. Installed on neighbours new Mac Mini and keys are now in the right place. I'm still very impressed with the Mini (yes vastly overpriced) but great performance and dashing good looks.

Haven't read the full thread, haven't got time. However, I have a purple brigade business brochure on my desk and on the back cover there is the following (full specs aren't given but I've listed what they show here):

Toshiba Laptop
17.3" screen
i5 CPU
3GB RAM
500GB HDD
Cost: £733

Apple Laptop
15.3" screen
i5 CPU
4GB RAM
320GB HDD
Cost: £1,492

Wtf is that about? Smaller screen and HDD, slightly more RAM, more than twice the price.

Nothing cool about that price if you ask me.

Better screen, arguably better OS, better looks and overall design.

Still a rip, mind you, but then I'm typing this on an iMac, so what do I know.

You can say an Octavia is a VW with a different badge.

Battery life? Screen quality? Webcam? Motion sensor and remote? Not made off cling film? Useful trackpad?

If you want to pay through the nose for design on a regular win laptop you could always go with a Sony. They look just as good as Apple in my opinon, but the price is still cheaper

And CrispyXUK - you're talking ******** about the Toshiba Laptop, it's a very soild laptop. probably more so then any mac book. In a 'drop test' i'm fairly confident which one will be working afterwards, and it won't be the apple

If you bought the Toshiba you'd spend half the day uninstalling all the rubbish they put on their machines. Tray center this, help center that, Toshiba messenger hmmm?, Toshiba media accelerator wha?!!? Still doesn't justify the price difference mind. :D

On a side note; Apple Macs are fairly cheap in the states... so they are good value out there. Not so good here but I paid a premium for a machine I'm very happy with and that I've used for 3 years with no fiddling required.
