Win 10, yay or nay?

I'm mixed about it so far.

I never used 8, the interface i got used to fast. I've had a fair few compatability issues with it so far, (I cant even play Deus Ex Human Revolution and a few other games wont load) but apart from that everything is ok! It's free so why not :)

Not keen on the idea of having my nvidia drivers changed every 5 mins when a new one comes out. For this im gona skip it for now as everything works not worth an extra 5fps if it breaks some games. I hear there is support till 2023 for 8.1? but Im gona hold out for the year, maybe the GPU thing will change. As its been mentioned Windows 10 roll out which I haven't got yet, is not ready for me, its not worth the aggro of spending the next few days trying to work around , and fix issues i dont have now.

Just turn off driver updates?? been the same in the last few versions of windows update.. just this one has it on by default.. takes less than 10 seconds to disable.

I upgrades to 10... everything works fine... no broken games... no problems with GFX card any drives all just works flawless..

Had a few weird sound issues with Asus Xonar dx 7.1 lately. For example sound only coming out of 1 side when the balance is equal, restarting fixed. Also sound not playing and getting white noise at full volume randomly out of the speaker or headphone when the sound volume is minimal. That scares the life out of you.

Using unified drivers though maybe that's the reason.

Yes Windows 10 is worth it.

There is no reason to upgrade at this time. You might want to wait for a little while (but ultimately don't miss the free upgrade offer).

I'm not anti Windows 10, but having upgraded I've found two things:

*The new UI is slow as molasses. The old UI is still present (Control Panel, etc), and when you compare how quick it is to get things done with the old UI compared to the new, you realise how awfully slow the new UI is.

Seriously, compare Add/Remove Programs (control panel) vs the new "Apps and Features". Night and day.

*There are many small bugs. Most of mine have been graphical, and I suspect (hope) a clean install might fix them. But there are also small bugs with the new apps.

*In daily is, it is not faster than win7.

Decided to put it on the other day. Made a complete image backup of my old system first though!

Seems to be running OK so far. The GUI is taking a bit of getting used to as I have never used Win 8.

I have tried to go through as many privacy options as possible and make sure I have opted out or turned off what I feel to be intrusive settings.

Found another one hidden away in the Windows Update page yesterday though. Something to do with allowing MS to use my PC to send data to other PC's over the internet. Sounded suspiciously like MS wanted to use me like a torrent seeder. Nah - not having any of that, so turned it off! :p

The other thing I find is explorer windows are bland. I prefered the Aero style visual themes in Win7, and from what I can see you can't actually change the colour of browser windows (and things like Firefox windows) only the font sizes.

Overall I quite like it to be honest, but it has not really wowed me. It just seems like a GUI update for Win7, but I admit I am not a "power user".

My PC is still doing the exact same thing as it was doing before the update, only now the user interface looks different. I am just getting to grips with learning where everything is. Definitely seems fragmented in terms of settings though. The main settings menu does not seem to cover everything, and I have found options and settings elsewhere so at the moment it does not feel as intuitive as Win7. But I am still learning and once I know where to look, getting there isn't a problem.

Are the unified drivers the "unofficial" ones? I'm currently using the recommended online ones, which aren't official along with XonarSwitch so it's easy to switch between my headphones and regular speakers, would like to know if this is still functioning before i try updating/installing.

Yeah unofficial ones. I've not been aware of this Xonar switch you speak of. I'll try it out later on if you like where do I get it from.

Don't get me wrong, the issues are manageable and 99% of the time they work fine. I used to have issues having both speakers and headphones plugged in with win 7 as sometimes the sound card wouldn't start correctly.

The upgrade process took around 40 minutes for me, including download. I haven't had any problems with it at all. In fact upgrading has solved a BSOD problem I was having with Windows 8.

So far I've tried BF4, EvE Online, The Witcher 3, Company of Heroes 2, Planetary Annihilation, and lots of porn. No problems. Except that now full details of my porn collection are in the hands of the NSA, CIA, DEA, DVLA, and Suffolk County Council. Obama is busy planning the invasion of my back garden for oil. Ah, I meant WMD's.

It get's a big old YAY from me, After the disappointment of Win 8 I was worried but I even found games that I could not get to work under Win 8 (Deadpool on Steam, Mass Effect on Origin) are magically working again, just like on Win 7.

So far I haven't got a single complaint.

Hmm, i've never had an issue with that, i'm on W7 currently. You can get XonarSwitch from here, you may find it useful!

If you haven't used it did you change the output via the regular control panel?

Anyone noticed their PC is killed completely when shutting down on Win 10?

My PC used to have LED's on the mobo lit after shut down on Win 7 64 to show there was still power. Now it is killing all power to the mobo and the keyboard PS2 port (the num lock light is off) and no lights are on at all. It is like I have unplugged it from the PSU completely.

Anyone else getting this? Should I be concerned?

Yeah I just change output using the normal Xonar style program. I have my headphones on headphone setting plugged directly into the sound card and my speakers on front panel 2 speakers and tend to leave them in all the time. Maybe that's what causes my rare sound issues.

Not had that myself. My keyboard regularly stayed back lit when I power off my pc both on Win 7 and Win 10. Using a Qpad MK85. Just attributed it to the motherboard.

Indifferent about it really. It's Windows, it does the job albeit it looks a bit different than before.

No complaints so far

But bear in mind that if you do, you may hit compatibility problems with your hardware.

Machines which have yet to be offered the update haven't been done so because MS can't guarantee that all your hardware is 100% compatible. That may just be a lack of drivers for your hardware at the moment.

My laptop has updated but my desktop hasn't. I'm going to wait a few weeks to see if any future patches make the upgrade icon appear immediately. No rush.

Indeed, I'm in no particular tearing hurry to install Win 10 - that said, the day I finally get rid of that godawful 8.1 will be one to celebrate.

I haven't got the offer icon in the taskbar yet, but I ran Microsoft's Win10 Compatibility Checker last night out of curiosity. My machine passed all the tests, including the licensing gubbins, apart from one: it notified me I hadn't installed a specific patch and gave a KB number.

I then installed that via Windows Update - still no icon in the taskbar. I ran Compatibility Checker again and all was good including the fact that this particular patch had been installed. However, it flagged up "Patch KB xxxxxxx has not yet been run", the patch in question being the one I had just installed.

Since when did you have to do anything with a patch other than install it? Any ideas what's going on?

^^

Don't you need a certain amount of free space on your Windows drive for the icon to show up? Had a guy at work that had less than 20 GB free and as soon as here freed up some space the icon appeared.
