Win 10, yay or nay?

Its a phased rollout, you could be waiting days or weeks. You can go ahead and upgrade anyway though, you don't have to wait.

But bear in mind that if you do, you may hit compatibility problems with your hardware.

Machines which have yet to be offered the update haven't been done so because MS can't guarantee that all your hardware is 100% compatible. That may just be a lack of drivers for your hardware at the moment.

My laptop has updated but my desktop hasn't. I'm going to wait a few weeks to see if any future patches make the upgrade icon appear immediately. No rush.

Reminder to all that Win10 installs with the privacy settings off as a default. Unless you want Microsoft to know literally everything you do on the internet thanks to a unique ID, turn them on. NOW.

That applies to Windows 7 and 8.1, since Microsoft has released updates that put the tracking into those too.

99% of hardware under Windows 10 are using the same drivers as under 8 and 7. The only issues so far appear to be with certain soundcards.

YAY, well I just upgraded. Very happy with the process, quick and painless. I thought it was going to be hours because I didn't wait for the notification but it took less than 30 minutes!!

I have a clean install and still have no issues at present, games run fine and system starts up quick enough. Prefer the start menu over windows 8.1 style.

I'm having problems running two monitors in Win 10.

In 8.1 I could play a game on my main monitor whilst watching a film on my TV (via hdmi lead from second GFX card port). In Win 10 it works okay for a bit then both screens get so laggy the PC runs like treacle.

Cannot find a solution so far so might just go back to previous Win :(

Seems not everything passed their compatibility check. Just spent the last 3 hours fixing my Dad's laptop after he upgraded without checking with me first!

No idea but wouldn't a Gameport to USB adapter be an option for you..?

Tried a couple of different ones and they don't seem to work right, some function buttons don't work nor does force feedback and flight sim (FS2004) isn't anywhere near as fluid in the control response as it is on a mates old rig that still runs XP which is subtle but makes a huge difference - in Flight Sim - on awkward approaches with high winds etc.

Not keen on the idea of having my nvidia drivers changed every 5 mins when a new one comes out. For this im gona skip it for now as everything works not worth an extra 5fps if it breaks some games. I hear there is support till 2023 for 8.1? but Im gona hold out for the year, maybe the GPU thing will change. As its been mentioned Windows 10 roll out which I haven't got yet, is not ready for me, its not worth the aggro of spending the next few days trying to work around , and fix issues i dont have now.

Ok just installed Windows 10, liking it so far... one question though, I've installed a bandwidth monitor that I normally used on Windows 7, but it's reporting constantly downloading something in the background? It's not windows update as I have stopped the service for that.

Any ideas what it could be? and how can I check? I tried perfmon.exe /res in a command prompt but it's not really helpful. Can an app like NetLimiter diagnose it?

Thanks

Figured out what was eating my bandwidth but got another problem.

Installed Dirt Rally and was doing some benchmarking, 15 minutes later PC turns off completely.

Felt my components and the GPU was red hot and so was the CPU heatsink, so obviously it reached it's threshold and shut the PC down to prevent damage... my question is, why the hell did it overheat?!

Never had any problems with overheating until now? I'm installing some monitoring tools now.

Mate has had this issue , his GTX 260 overheated - the fans just stopped turning - yet it apparently works fine in his #2 machine which is still running 7, strange!

I installed this at launch. I'd had an issue with my machine about 2 weeks before and needed to reinstall Windows. I held off on setting up a load of stuff as I didn't want to go through the rigmarole of doing it all again under 10.

I've been pretty impressed so far. In general use my machine feels faster, my wife's laptop is also much more responsive. There have been a few speedbumps along the way, but pretty minor. A couple of times the start menu has stopped working but that has been fixed with a reboot.
