Windows 10

Considering its the future direction of Windows, not taking the free upgrade would be rather foolish.

However, waiting until the 28th July 2016 before taking it, in order to let them iron out all the inevitable teething issues is probably not a bad idea.

I agree with both your points here.

IMO W10 was a good bit quicker and more efficient than 8.1 and this was testing in a VM as well as seeing it on a friends laptop.

I think they are making a good move with the UI. Yes w8/8.1 had complaints regarding modern UI but now they are appealing to modern UI lovers and legacy users with a nice blend.

For me, I got used to modern UI but will still be using the new start menu in w10.

has anyone found any information on if ms will give out new keys to those upgrading to 10?

i dont wipe and renstall widows as often as i used to but if i am reinstalling id like to be to have a fresh start and thats new key requiring.

Those taking the upgrade won't get new keys. Your current 7 or 8 key will be reused as a 10 key.

Just remember win8 OEM is totally different to win7 oem

And 8.1 is different again isn't it?

Although most of the differences are on paper rather than technically how they work.

Now I have a "get windows 10" icon in my win7 task tray.

I tried windows 10 a few months back and I used the same X-Fi drivers and apps that I used for win7. I never had any probs using the win7 drivers and they are old too.

Wow 6 years old X-Fi Windows 7 driver worked in Windows 10.

Creative will have Windows 10 driver for X-Fi from July. :)

They still have not fixed the DPI issue at 1080 on my projector :(

I've let them know about it and they said they are aware of it, but 1 month before release and still not fixed. Not looking promising.

The first screenshots is from 9926 build.

This screenshot is from the 10074 build. The difference is clear in my opinion. Both screenshots are at 1080p resolution.

Can clearly see the difference in dpi with 1080 over hdmi. Because of this 3d is not working either.

If they are like any other software dev team, then the reported bugs/defects will be prioritised by their impact to the user and worked on in priority order. They will also have set a cut-off priority - any defects below this priority may not be fixed in the first release build.

That doesn't mean they won't get fixed in the future. It means that the defect was considered minor, and the software was considered 'good enough' to go live without fixing it now.

mmm maybe the Linx 10 might not meet other criteria of the requirements for the upgrade :(

Your Linx 10 met all criteria of the requirements for the upgrade.

So I had same issue had no icon on task tray, it was nightmare a day ago tried everything to fixed it after uninstalled KB3035583 and afterward found no updates on Windows Update. So I found KB3035583 using program called Portable Update that download update manually to folder.

I posted my solution on Microsoft Answer below hope it will fix your issue.

1. Uninstalled KB3035583 and restarted PC then ran Windows Update but found no update

2. Download kb3035583 x86 or x64 cab file below

3. Copy cab file to C:\temp

4. Open command prompt with elevated

5. Copy and paste x86 or x64 DISM command below then press Enter

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\temp\windows8.1-kb3035583-x86_dc717b43d95c7fd7c12fee2f13e0b17a412e41ee.cab

6. After installed cab file then Windows 10 icon will pop up

Seems that way. MS have only explicitly said that Enterprise versions won't get the free upgrade.

I mistakenly uninstalled the KB3035583 from my Windows 8.1 with Bing laptop and now it won't find it again through Windows Update... :(

Try my solution posted on Microsoft Answer below hope it will fix your issue.

Thats exactly how its been with update versions since Windows 7.

If you upgrade OEM its OEM. If you upgrade Retail its Retail.

Hence my "wtf" at your rant that taking the update to Windows 10 would mean turning your Retail Windows 8 license into an OEM Windows 10 trial that expires after a year.

They can't change the terms of your underlying license without you agreeing, and nothing in the W10 update terms states they would.

Hmm right yet still wrong.

Of course the EULA can be changed. Its a new O/S any agreement in regard to the previous iterations is relevant to them not to the new Win 10 one. By accepting the upgrade you implicitly accept the terms of the new EULA and they can put whatever they like into it.

Yes, but my point is they haven't.

If what you said was true then the details of it within the EULA would have to be public by now, and the eagle eyes of an internet full of people convinced Microsoft are evil will have spotted it (anyone seen the wildly anrgy article on the Register accusing Microsoft of forcing Adware onto all Windows machines? Lol).

You are just scaremongering by spreading stories about fictional scenarios. Not really the best practice for a lawyer ;)

Hmm, I tried the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a spare SSD. Not really sure I like it, and probably won't upgrade unless I really need to. It feels clunky and disjointed, not to mention quite a bit slower than my Windows 8.1 install (that's saying a lot compared to Windows 7). I know it isn't finished yet, but if it's anything like it's current state I can see a lot of people not being happy with it.

And I actually prefer the Start Screen compared to the new Start Menu...

I like the direction they are going with it in general but yeah can't see myself jumping on it - its quite badly disjointed and the UI just looks terrible and is far more clunky to use compared to my very slightly tweaked Windows 7 and not having control of windows updates (though are ways around it) isn't something I'm a fan of.

Shame as I was really looking forward to the ability to scale the start menu/screen to any degree of functionality between fullscreen on mobile type devices to a minimal version with some widget type additions on the desktop.

It is frightening that neither Microsoft nor Apple can design a good UI these days.

Yeah, and the whole two control panels thing... is that going to be how it is in the final version? It's bizarre.

Personally, Windows 8.1 with all the boxes ticked in the Navigation tab of the Taskbar properties works perfectly for me. The full screen start menu showing all my apps isn't a problem at all and now I'm used to it. I used Windows 7 the other day and it felt weird to have a smaller menu. Much prefer the UI of 8.1 to 7/10 too.

^^ When I've really got my teeth into a project I'm switching between and starting/stopping programs quite rapidly the start screen is like a rude interruption whereas the old start menu with a little tweaking works pretty seamlessly.
