Windows 10

Windows 8 also has 2 Control Panels?

And you can scale the Start menu to whatever size you want or turn on a full screen Start screen?

But Windows 8's metro control panel is never really seen if you live on the desktop. Only occasionally for connecting to a new wireless network or somesuch.

And the Windows 10 Start Menu/Screen is full of rubbish I'm not interested in from what I saw using it, and it would never show me all of my programs for some reason. Is that something to be fixed?

When I press the Windows key in 8.1, I just get a simple full screen view of all my programs, nothing more, and I have enough that the metro apps are shuffled off to next page where I never venture.

^^ When I've really got my teeth into a project I'm switching between and starting/stopping programs quite rapidly the start screen is like a rude interruption whereas the old start menu with a little tweaking works pretty seamlessly.

See I've never really understood that. Alt-tab works exactly the same in 8.1. Literally the only difference is that one is full screen and the other isn't. It's the same number of clicks/keyboard presses to open, search and start a program. :p The difference is just in what you're used to rather than any actual advantage of one over the other.

All the tiles on the W10 Start Menu can be moved/customised. Other than that there is a list of apps, a link to settings, and buttons to shut down or log off. Hardly a load of rubbish you don't need.

Windows key on 8.1 shows the Metro Tiles does it not? Unless ive missed a switch somewhere? Apps are a swipe or click down.

The only issue I do have is that selecting the All Apps option only shows a scrolling list on the start screen, rather than taking up all the space used for Tiles. That does bug the hell out of me as with the larger touch sensitive spacing theres only about 10 apps visible on the screen at a time.

But I didn't need to do any customisation in Windows 8.1 except ticking these boxes:

Job done.

With that, when I press the Windows key, it just shows all my apps. No swiping or clicking on the down arrow.

For a start (something some people don't understand) I never search for something ever when using the start screen/menu (exception being when I'm customising it in the first place).

For instance I do a fair bit of hobby video game development/modding and when your working with the 3D World editor/level design can be swapping between that and the asset import pipeline i.e. tweaking a model, texture/material, sound, etc. on the fly maybe a bit of working with the engine code or scripts as you go the start screen if your anything like me is decidedly less than ideal compared to a properly organised start menu (I'm barely even looking at the start menu while changing between tasks whereas the start screen comes up over everything I'm doing).

EDIT: I've not spent much time in Windows 10 but the customisation options for the start screen/menu seem decidedly random, limited and badly thought out - I've not even seen a proper way to customise categories or any proper scaling if you use all small icons on certain groups, etc.

Agreed with other posters, having two Control Panels is rather irritating/bizarre. Felt different on Windows 8, but whilst using Windows 10 it does feel strange to keep swapping between the two depending on which options you click.

Looking forward to the final release - currently using the latest fast ring build which is good, but still having certain bugs (start menu deciding when it will and won't open, for example).

Ah I hadn't spotted those last 2 options. But I never actually use the 8 Start Screen anyway as ive got everything I need pinned to the task bar, and if I do press Start I just type what I need.

They are good settings for desktops though so good to know.

For 10, you would just remove all the tiles you don't want, but the apps list is still a click away. I'll see if theres any other customisation options in 10 now.

Your Linx 10 met all criteria of the requirements for the upgrade.

So I had same issue had no icon on task tray, it was nightmare a day ago tried everything to fixed it after uninstalled KB3035583 and afterward found no updates on Windows Update. So I found KB3035583 using program called Portable Update that download update manually to folder.

I posted my solution on Microsoft Answer below hope it will fix your issue.

1. Uninstalled KB3035583 and restarted PC then ran Windows Update but found no update

2. Download kb3035583 x86 or x64 cab file below

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._dc717b43d95c7fd7c12fee2f13e0b17a412e41ee.cab

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._569671257f46c76e5f5d2f53b1c35500447ad302.cab

3. Copy cab file to C:\temp

4. Open command prompt with elevated

5. Copy and paste x86 or x64 DISM command below then press Enter

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\temp\windows8.1-kb3035583-x86_dc717b43d95c7fd7c12fee2f13e0b17a412e41ee.cab

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\temp\windows8.1-kb3035583-x64_569671257f46c76e5f5d2f53b1c35500447ad302.cab

6. After installed cab file then Windows 10 icon will pop up

Woot...

That worked a treat and now I have registered the Linx tablet. Much appreciated and thanks for the very detailed instructions.

Guys how long is the free offer for download available? My computer is offering me to upgrade. It says its a full upgrade and not a trial, I was seeing somewhere that it only lasts a year? lel.

It is not a trial. You will only be able to upgrade within the first year for free :) ie. if you upgrade August 2016, you would have to pay.

Its unlikely. My understanding is that the upgrade has to be activated from within a valid upgradable O/S. So you would need to install win 7 or 8 first as a fresh install then upgrade to 10.

If you want to have a complete clean install you would probably need to buy a full retail copy of Win 10.

Thanks i guess you cant complain as the upgrade is completely free.

So if I upgrade today I wont have to pay for windows 10 period?
Thats interesting, people were giving a different impression earlier on in this thread.

That is my impression - they have said it will be security updates for life when you upgrade. However, they will release annual updates which they may decide to charge for in the future (these would be optional though, just like Vista/7/8).

I was originally also concerned that the one year thing meant 'one year and then pay', but it would seem this is not the case :)

Currently have windows 10 as my only os, guessing im going to have to reinstall windows 7 to get the upgrade?

I assume it will work in the same way existing builds do :)

It wouldn't be completely clean, but you could always do a clean install via an Insider Build (grab the ISO from Microsoft), use your existing key and then update the Insider Preview once the full version is out.

I would be surprised if they isn't an option to clean install anyway.

Its a full upgrade. Its on offer at a price of £0 for the first year. After that buying a Windows 10 upgrade will cost £something.

Not at all :) You will be able to upgrade from the last build before release to release.

They have only confirmed you can move to the final release if your running Windows 10 Preview having installed it over a Windows 7 or 8.1 install though the Windows Update method.

MS have not confirmed how (or if) you will be able to do it if you clean installed Windows 10 Preview, as there is no license key anywhere in those installs.
