Windows 10

They won't keep giving them away for free. The free offer is just to encourage people to move to Windows 10. After a year it will cost to upgrade, and buying a license outright will cost from release day.

They are actually moving to a similar structure to Apple, or at least as close as they can get. From W10 onwards you will get a Windows license with all future upgrades to it included in the cost of buying a new device, the same as OSX. However in addition you can buy a license to apply to a machine you have built yourself, which you can't do with OSX. Making money from selling consumer OS's is dead. Microsoft have now realised this. Just look at Windows 8.1 with Bing. The pricing to OEMs of this software hasn't been officially released, but its believed to be free. Considering tablets like the HP Stream 7 are being sold for £50 with full 8.1 licenses and free Office 365, Microsoft clearly aren't making any money on the OS :p.

Its easy to forget that in terms of the whole market, buying a Windows license to apply to a self built PC is actually a pretty rare situation. Most devices out there will have come with Windows pre installed. The difference is it will now be just "Windows" installed, rather than a specific release of Windows.

The fact some Microsoft wording has started refering to it as WX (Windows X, as in 10) gives clues as to the model they are adopting... *cough* OSX *cough* ;).

Has anyone managed to get the upgrade to 10 sorted on a parallels version of windows? I had windows 8 and tried to get the pop up but it seemed like I missed it because I need 8.1. Upgraded to that and still nothing. I have run a script that should have triggered it as well. I definite have the update that is related to this.

Tried the preview yesterday, what is up with those ghastly explorer icons, especially the folders? Looks like a child designed them

The whole UI looks like a child designed it (EDIT: I know its a work in progress and some stuff will be place holders but mostly its about the same level or just copies from Windows 8 so likely to be close to the final version of those elements :S)

What will happen driver wise as all my drivers are win 7 64bit and then after installing windows 10 is my pc liable to go into meltdown due driver compatibility issues?

Windows 10 - Confused. Is it free on not to upgrade from W7/8?

I seem to read conflicting comments...

So you can upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10. But some places say it's free for (just) a year? If so then what?

Other's imply free forever?

And then I thought Windows 10 was a monthly subscription charge?

Confused!

Anyone able to clarify?

It's free forever if you upgrade in the first year. It's just a limited time promotional offer.
Nothing to get confused about.
No monthly charge wither.

I'm sure once you upgrade it is free forever. Unless something happens and you need a new key or would like a retail disc, then it will cost.

An free upgrade reservation just dropped on my bar. Currently on W8, obvious question - should I upgrade?

1. Will I need to wipe the PC and re-install everything all over again, including STEAM and Games and also programs?

2. What's the faffage factor with compatibility with Internet etc?

3. Can I roll back to W8 if it sucks?

I'm happy to give it a go if faffage is minimal.

Same question here really. I have Windows 7 & 8 PCs, so would be interesting in upgrading them all if it is totally free (as people have said), and there is basically no real faffage/re-installing etc involved!

TBH, if there is faffage I'll just sit tight.

Depending on version no faff

I don't have a DX12 GPU anyway which is a big feature, but when I do I'll want W10, I have so much stuff going on right now the last thing I need is a lot of PC faffage.

Maybe with a week off work sometime this summer and a new card i'll be happier spending time doing it.

But if it's painless I might get on with anyway.

Lol, "faffage" :D:p

I would strongly recommend that everyone who qualifies for the free upgrade takes it. Windows 10 is the future direction for Microsoft, and you have the oportunity to get onto that version for free.

But, the offer of a free upgrade is going to be on for a year, so there is absolutely no rush. I you in the least bit concerned then just wait it out and let those who jump on board straight away find all the issues and niggles. You have until the end of July 2016 to take the free upgrade.
