Windows 10

Im downloading windows 10 64 bit now. However, on the download page it says

"If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx). For more information about product keys and when they are required, visit the FAQ page.""

Is that MY WINDOWS 7 KEY?

Must be. But, i would download the ISO and then go back and do an upgrade. Remember, you have to do an upgrade first before you can do a clean install. Once the upgrade has activated then you can do a clean install.

Used my 5 year old work laptop as my guinea pig, smooth sailing and runs great. I might have to get an SSD and upgrade the RAM on this machine, still got a few more years in her :).

I have Windows 7 installed on my C drive (SSD) but my user profile is on my E drive.

If i upgrade to Win10 will this stay the same or will it mess it up?

To anyone mentioning the double settings screen when trying to install 10, I got that too.

Thinking they buggered up and duplicated that part for some reason. Silly MS.

Nice to know it's not just me with the double screen thing, makes it look like something is going wrong lol!

I'm not sure what you mean here?

He just means you can still scroll up and down on a window that you are not currently using. Say you are web browsing then if you move your mouse over another window without clicking you can still scroll on it.

I think it will cause problems but I'm not certain. I've had issues just moving personal folders onto another drive and that's with a fresh 10 install!

I'm having major instability problems after a win7 upgrade install... after a few minutes of doing pretty much anything things just stop responding. No crashes, no error messages, just one by one things stop working and I have to reboot. Tried resetting my overclock and still doing it. Also Intel Extreme Tuning Utility no longer works and can't be reinstalled.

Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.

Ofcourse you need to upgrade first though :)

Ok thanks. However, its an upgrade I think that i'll need, as a clean install will erase all my files?, and the only way to get them back would be image restore IE: Windows 7 back instead of win 10. ?

I would definitly try a reset if I was in your situation. reset is just like a fresh clean install but is slightly more automated. before you do it make sure Windows 10 is activated

EDIT: if you decide to do a reset make sure you disconnect all your other hard drives first. Yes Windows asks you if you want to refresh just the drive that the OS is installed to or other drives as well but I dont trust it! :D

To disable Windows Update auto installing drivers.
Control Panel - System and Security - System - Advanced System Settings - Hardware - Device Installation Properties
Turn off the Always install drivers through updates.

I've done that, but still it insists on installing the Realtek drivers for my on board audio.

Anything else I can do to stop it?

(I have a soundcard installed and working.)

Have you backed up all your files? You could take an image of the drive first before trying the upgrade

So your issue is that you are down by 100MHz or so on 3DMark?

If that is all i wouldnt worry about it. Remember that software developers have to catch up to Win 10 and produce compatible software

As the two posters above you'll need to go into your BIOS and disable on-board sound.

Same thing applies if your mobo has onboard GFX and you use a proper one in the PCI-e slot.
