Windows 10

From update and from the media... any ideas?

Updating from 7 Pro.[/QUOTE]

Have that updating from Pro 8.1. Tried everything from removing software to cold booting and cleaning system files, etc. Going to sit this one out until I go for a clean install.

I have done several "upgrades" for people to help them with their Windows 10 installation and generally it has been fine (ensuing Macrium backups have been done first) but we will be visiting our youngest daughter and she is wanting me to help with her Windows 7 laptop.

If I get the chance to take it away with me, only a short visit, I'll feel better about doing the process but is it possible when using either the media creation tool or a prepared USB stick with the ISO to select to not keep the files, settings and applications etc of the previous OS and for that to be ok for activation....? It would save time having to reset the OS once installed providing that it would still activate.
Up to now I have always kept those files and done a "full upgrade" and only on my main PC did I then do a clean install on a formatted drive.

What's with 'Settings' AND 'Control Panel'? Both have different options and some links in Settings open in Control Panel style windows..?

Confusing.

Installing now... Done a fresh install (after half a hour figuring out how to do it)

I only use a computer to come on this forum and to buy cars... Will come in super handy if I can play my Xbox games on it though!

Laptop keeps shutting down now... "Getting critical updates, don't turn off"

Then it just shuts down straight away....

Yay.

Edit: sorted it... Laptop turned all lights, bluetooth, turbo, fan etc on. Quickly turned them off and its stopped shutting down now.

Edit 2: Ok maybe not, bloody things...

Now I have done the upgrade thing, can I do a clean install of this? will it activate automatically?

make sure your W10 is activated.

once it is you can do a clean install using the ISO and then it will activate once the PC has internet access.

skip the two stages where it asks for the product key and you should be fine

I am getting a new SSD which I want to format into separate partitions before I reinstall Windows 10...

Currently my old SSD has Windows 10 installed on it (C) that will become my E Drive for download 180gig...

My new SSD I want to partition into a C and D

C = 300gig for Windows
D = 700 gig for Movies

How would I do this before I reinstall Windows 10?

Do I need to stick the SSD in and partition into 2 partitions E and F and then install windows?

Im a bit confused :)

Cool thanks

Well it all went well for me :)

Bought 3 x 8.1 Pro keys from G2A for £17 each, installed and activate, upgraded to 10 via the USB/ISO and activated then clean installed booting from USB/ISO, all 3 activated and working fine. Also did the same with my Toshiba Encore 8" tablet but that already came with Windows 8 but again everything went well :)

I tried using 10 with recommended settings, signing in with my MS account and using Edge but I didn't feel comfortable with big brother watching my every move so now I've disabled all tracking and signing in to a local account. I've also switched back to chrome as it just works better!

I do like Windows 10 and streaming Xbone even to tablet works very well but do find it a bit intrusive, might dual boot a Linux distro for things like Kodi ;)

Updating from 7 Pro.

Try disabled anti-virus for 1 hour and run setup again.

Surely the easiest way would be to do a clean install on a non partitioned SSD and then go into Computer Managemant and create your partitions afterwards?

Im not sure?

Do you mean just install windows 10 as normal onto the 1tb SSD and I can then split that into partions after install in windows?

But what about over all efficiency? From what I keep hearing, Windows 10 is causing high battery consumption on BayTrail devices; when the system is idle the CPU runs at a higher clock compared to Win 8.1. Connect Standby is reported to eat a lot more battery too.

This is what has kept me from updating to Windows 10 on my tablet.

Not sure about this, my Atom Z3735F (BayTrail-T) runs at 0.64Mhz when I'm not doing anything on W10 Home 32 bit. Battery life seems as good if not longer.

I presume you have already activated your Windows 10?

Yes its that easy. Install your new SSD. Install Windows 10 on SSD. Once installed then you can partition afterwards. Its pretty easy. Check out some youtube videos if you are not sure.

Anyway to change partition name? I cannot revert back to 7 as the partition needs to be named OS_Install.

OEM BIOS_RVY and System is still there so I can revert back to 7, just cannot suss how to chnage the C: partition name.
