Windows 10

The activation server determined the specific key is blocked.

Oh great!! :(

Double check your activation key? Weirdly when mine deactivated and got the CD out to input it again, it wasn't even the same code! Not sure how or when it changed.

That was just a moment ago, currently DLing W10 to install.

Anyone else have this problem where they download and .exe and windows 10 says that you don't have permission to run .exe? Even if you run it as administrator, fix the permissions and unblock .exe it still refuses to run. I even added it to windows defender exceptions and it still fails to run. Very frustrating as i was in the middle of working and some guy couldn't get to my pc because i can't run the logmein .exe because windows thinks its malicious.

It seems anything i do anything these days MS is finding a way to annoy me, if its not windws updates breaking servers its something else. Always something. It never just works. That should be ms new slogan, it never just works.

Time to change jobs Groan. :D

So replacing your ssd boot drive with another will require a new licence? What a load of ********.

No it wont. Doing a fresh install wipes any possibility of a key being stored locally so it is the Mobo that's the issue.

I am tempted to buy windows 10 at the end of the upgrade period of just before as I am planning on moving from AMD to Intel within this time.

Unless msft release a way to allow this, maybe give access to the key which can be used with a single w10 licence or something

tried renaming the file ?

Finally just done the upgrade. Now, what's the best way to do a clean install?

before clean install make sure w10 is activated

get the MS tool here and download the required ISO, either make a iso file or get the software to do a USB stick.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

once done format as normal and install from USB stick, skip at both points where its asks for a key and will activate once online.

Why not just download the ISO mount it to a virtual dvd rom drive and then run the setup and then choose to wipe the harddrive or upgrade keeping your files? I think i did that during the beta stage wiping the install that way but i can't remember if it kept the non windows files or formatted completely. I don't remember seeing any drive selection or formatting though. If you upgrade it creates a windows.old but if you wipe it doesn't, i don't think. Unless you are changing your drive i can't see any reason to go through the trouble of putting it on usb. If you are coming from windows 7 or 8 I recommend mounting the ISO then running the setup and then using the upgrade feature. It is meant to keep all your settings without any problems and i tried it during the beta and it worked well. Just install windows 10 drivers and its done.

A fresh install of Win 10 seems to be a tricky affair. I'm having to do it a second time now, as I forgot to turn off the auto download of drivers ad they where basically in my windows update but kept failing as I had already installed them....

Restart the installation and immediately turn that off!

Actually this could became a real problem if manufactures (Gigabyte, Asus, MSI etc) stop providing manual updates and only publish them to Microsoft!
