Windows 10

I have found that you can download the latest update via Windows Update, but if you still have the recovery files from the previous big update (windows.old to recover backwards to the previous version), then the newer version won't ever install. It's almost like it refuses to install because it can't make backup files of your current install, even though it says it's ready to install.

To fix it, open an explorer window, right click on your system drive, choose "properties", then "disk cleanup", then "clean up system files". Select everything, do the cleanup. I've seen this take an hour on a machine that had never had this done before, so just leave it to finish. Then you should get the update to download via Windows Update, and this time it will install correctly (this may also take a long time).

I've never even got offered it for it to fail. I also didn't have any of the recovery files.

Randomly got offered it today without touching anything. Not sure if it's because of the security issue or just windows being windows.

Will update it later, wonder if anything will break :p.

So, updated to 1709 and it mostly seems ok, classic shell still works, so that's good.

I have two small issues though.

1) The bios start up time, according to windows is now 16020 or so. So that's clearly bugged as it takes no longer to boot up. Used to show 20s or so (pretty normal for x99).
2) After the windows jingle, it makes the sound for something being connected/disconnected. None of the usb devices I have blink off or anything, so not sure what that is all about.

Not played any games yet, so still time for it to fall over and die.

Ah delicious the Windows 10 official discussion forum is going into meltdown over the latest updates and people increasingly realising how poor the OS overall really is - sadly though I think MS is just pretending the discussion forum doesn't exist.

Well constant issues here with the updates over the last couple of months it seems.

I rarely check the update history and I just let windows 10 do its thing, and restart within the time windows I have set.

However it seems the issue started in December with the failure of KB4054517, and then now in Jaunary with KB4056982.

I have tried to install manually, I have tried the troubleshooting guide, I have tried to rename the Software Distribution file to force Windows to create another and start a fresh. I have killed my virus killer for the time being and STILL no luck.

First time I have had issues like this

Oh wow on the Windows 10 forums MS employees are now copy and pasting responses that people should file on the feedback hub annoyances with Windows update.............. you know the thing that was actively going on throughout the insider program before launch and was usually 5-6 of the top 10 promoted issues and completely ignored....... what a bunch of absolute muppets.

I've stayed on Windows 7 rather than upgrading to 10, however I'd now like to make use of the xbox one to PC streaming which I understand is available on the 10 app store.

Anything major I should consider before upgrading?

Edit: Well, looking back in this thread I've decided not to take the jump.

Creators update is driving me mad i dunno what to do apart from a format which will be a hassle.

I either get no sound to my samsung tv or tv keeps refreshing I have held off formatting for now but i have to roll back EVERY day now it seems which is annoying.

The fun

Bare in mind people only rant when something goes wrong and not when everything is fine! for every person with a problem there are probably 10 fold with no issues at all, myself for example. I've installed, updated and generally messed about with so many Windows 10 installs on so many different systems and never had a single issue.

Hum it looks like I'm going to have to reinstall my gaming rig OS soon. Windows 10 is hanging around for ages every boot with the progress icon before login screen. Also taking ages to shut down sometimes. Resume from hibernate isn't working reliably anymore either just giving me a black screen half the time. :(

Before the last few updates I was on my desktop within 9 seconds now it's more like 20.

I've tried disabling all sorts of services and programs including malwarebytes (which has helpfully had issues too)/antivirus, and haven't installed anything new lately.

*sigh*

Think I may just install the Win10 I have from ISO, completely disable updates and blackhole all Microsoft domains to keep a stable gaming system. Either that or back to Win7 although I haven't forgotten what a pain that is to get set up nicely in the first instance what with index disk thrashing and other issues...

Despite the issues I recently had with it, I still really like Windows 10.

The only pain in the backside for me was the redownload and reinstall of some of my Windows Store games. GOW + GOW4 + Dead Rising 4 is a total of about 250gb........

They have to introduce a better system to this unless I am missing the obvious

i like win 10 but it is a nightmare and creators update is the main cause for many issues. one one machine i own been close to just hitting it with a hammer :p
