And what a way to spend your free evening, fixing a issue caused by Microsoft.

To be fair, this is the first major issue I've had since moving to windows 10 just after it's launch so can't complain.

I have found that you can download the latest update via Windows Update, but if you still have the recovery files from the previous big update (windows.old to recover backwards to the previous version), then the newer version won't ever install. It's almost like it refuses to install because it can't make backup files of your current install, even though it says it's ready to install.
To fix it, open an explorer window, right click on your system drive, choose "properties", then "disk cleanup", then "clean up system files". Select everything, do the cleanup. I've seen this take an hour on a machine that had never had this done before, so just leave it to finish. Then you should get the update to download via Windows Update, and this time it will install correctly (this may also take a long time).
.what build does your machine show as being on current?
Wow so you are five odd updates behind, ok so remove any internet security or anti virus software you have and try to install the latest patch from here http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=KB4056892
Edit: Well, looking back in this thread I've decided not to take the jump.
