Windows 10

Why does it feel like something slapped haphazardly into the OS rather than an integrated feature?

Be nice if they spent the time getting the rest of the OS up to a good level first as well.

Reports of the latest Patch Tuesday security update (KB5001330) causing all sorts of issues, BSOD, performance problems etc... etc..., luckily, im having no issues.
It’s killed my PC as of this morning. Folks on Reddit have discovered it’ll either hammer gaming performance or just give you BSOD loops the latter of which I’m getting.

Uninstalling it this morning didn’t help because the OS just reinstalled the damn thing upon shutdown/restart. Sys Restore was useless too so I’ll have to refer to Reddit to see how they get on when I get home later.

Hmm one of those is a new one on me - but do they actually work? in the past I've not found any method actually does it properly either randomly getting reset by the OS when it feels like it or not preventing updates MS deems "important", etc.

The updates approach feels more and more dated as well - it should be possible to side stream a lot of this stuff without requiring a reboot, etc. not to mention better management of security and out of band updates.

Already paused updates for 7 days cheers however the update is ‘in’ the OS somewhere so it’ll just reapply afaik. Like I said I’ll have to check later and see.

Switching off updates in Poledit also is reported not to work as the update still takes effect somehow though I’ll also try this anyway at some point.

How the hell we are still stuck with such a poor method of updates in 2021 I just don’t get. I’ve managed to scrape by so many reported issues with updates over the years until now.

It is something that puzzles me with software in general though Windows 10 is up there with the worst for it. Especially with an OS in this day and age you'd think software deployment - patches/updates, store, etc. would be something they'd nail from almost day one.

Microsoft never learns a damn thing from this. They've got a track history of not testing and putting out dodgy patches. This is what really cheeses me off today about software developers. As well as testers.

You do realise they got rid of a lot of testers last year which is why so many dodgy patches get through. I agree with Rroff about the upgrade deployment, sick of restarting after an update.

So I read from @Rroff a year ago or so. Which goes to show you how smart Microsoft is with all this. Cockup after cockup. I miss the old days when you could have no worry with their patches/updates and the days of Service Packs. Even Barnacules had a Youtube on that many years ago.

Very rare did things go wrong versus today and if it did, it was usually dealt with swiftly back then.

Well I can't fix my install. After spending an hour constantly rebooting and trying different things uninstalling the latest updates just make the OS reinstall them even though I have auto updates in gpedit switched off. It's garbage like this that makes me miss the good olde days of Windows 7 when I actually felt 'connected' to my OS experience.

I'll try a windows reset in a moment.

Agreed. That's the reason I'm still on 1909 and I've paused feature update for a year, I have no interest in being a guinea pig to their buggy software. Don't get me wrong I do like Windows most of the time I just hate the whole update process.

Windows reset seems to have worked. I just cba spending hours tonight reinstalling programs all over again so I’ll do it slowly over the next few days. What a mess.

Update: I used this script to remove all the absolute garbage that a fresh install now has because I was shocked at all the games and crap that is pushed onto you.

20H2 has finally been offered to me as a "Feature update", on 1909.

I am going to wait a month or so after 21H1 is released, then just jump to that.
