Windows 10

I am hoping that at some point some sufficiently dedicated person with time on their hands might condense this thread into an FAQ sticky. :D

(I, for instance, want a simple definitive answer as to what a "Device" is? When I got Win8Pro (admittedly as part of the £25 special deal) I understood it to be a "Builders" OS not tied to any specific hardware. Do I lose or keep this entitlement if I get the "Free" upgrade to Win10?)
device = a pc / laptop / phone / tablet.

the free w10 upgrade won't be like w8 upgrade. it can't be transferred to new hardware.

but you can go back to your previous os/license at anytime.

What exactly constitutes "New Hardware"

My PC (Like I imagine many peoples here) is like Triggers broom.

well - have updated to build 162 all good so far, except you still have toad back in Insider hub via apps, and add language packs to use Cortana in UK - not had a chance to see if she is working yet.

Upgrade was fast and smooth though I must admit. Need to start digging and see what works and does not etc.

MS hasn't gave information yet on what things will trigger a reactivation but im guessing it'll be very similar to as they are now.

tbh anyone who regular upgrades hardware would be better to buy win10 retail or go back to the previous os or use the windows10 insider preview

I wrote a FAQ. Glaucus ignored it.

Basically, a Windows 10 upgrade will work on 1 device. If you upgrade from Retail 7 or 8.1 that retail license remains and remains transferable, but only as Windows 7 or 8.1.

I've tweeted that Gabe, must I really must find out if they intend to mimic W8.1's Onedrive implementation. W10's going to suck a bit at the moment.

What have they changed? I've not used 8.1 at home and I'm really looking forward to never needing to worry about where my documents are.

On 8.1, you can choose to make files/folders available offline, or online only.
You can't do that on 10. They're either synced and on the device, or not synced. But then that kind of means you can't see everything. On Windows 8.1, everything's there, except stuff on the cloud only is "see through". On W10, it's just not visible period unless you then manually sync it. But then it'll come on the device :p

Which is crap really.

Sorry if this is lost somewhere in this thread, but when will Windows 10 be available? I've registered for the upgrade copy via that 'thing' in the icon tray on W7. But it doesn't say when I'll be able to get it?

the official release date for W10 is the 29th of July 2015.

as you have registered with the W10 icon it will automatically download it on release and prompt you when its ready to install

^^^ Sorry... now corrected! :D

I hadn't appreciated that yours were also for the en-gb version, as most are for the US variant.

Yeah I understand, about the GB regional differences. I have now marked mine accordingly. Unless I have verifiable md5's or from a trusted source, not a reflection of you, I'm kinda wary about downloading an OS from anything other than the official sources.

I agree with you, and actually found the link I posted late last night, but I didn't put it on here until this morning after the download had completed.

For anyone after official download links for other countries, a fairly comprehensive list can be found at:

http://keyscity.net/windows-10-insi...2-x86-x64-official-direct-download-iso-links/

Hopefully one or more of these will be of use to some folk on here! :)

Anyone else having problems with smb guest shares? Went from 10130 -> 10162. Working fine on 130, now my Dune media server cannot access files on my pc. Tried adding the AllowInsecureGuestAuth to the registry, no go.
