Windows 10

You have 3 options.

8.1 -> wait to the 29th and take the free upgrade to 10 Final = Fully licensed 10 using your 8.1 license.

8.1 -> update to 10 Preview using Windows Update now -> get 10 Final on the 29th = Fully licensed 10 using your 8.1 license.

Clean install 10 from an ISO -> get 10 Final on the 29th = Fully licensed Windows 10 as a Preview license.

If you stay in the Preview program you can continue running Preview builds under that license. If however you opt out of the Preview program you will stop getting new builds, and the Preview build you are on will eventually expire (about 6 months after its release) and your PC will then stop working until you apply a valid 10 license.

Can we sticky this from Skeeter please? (or stick it in the opening post?)

There was a flow chart picture someone put up a while back that was much clearer. Although it didn't include the ability to run Preview after the 29th.

but it won't be the 29th for win7/8.1 users

Yes, we heard you the first 23 times :p:rolleyes:

Wether your upgrade is ready on the 29th or a few days later is hardly the key point being discussed.

so why continue posting it'll be on 29th. when you clearly know it's only insiders are getting it on the 29th. they've clearly said already people that reserved will get it after the 29th

some people may think they'll get it on 29th then get disappointed when it doesn't

Because the release dates the 29th.

Because the release dates the 29th.

yes 29th is the release date, but that doesn't mean everybody can get it on that date.. they are limiting it to a select grope for the first day or so, then work up, slowly, it could take 5-7days for them to finish all the waves rolled out.

So if you imagine that what would have traditionally arrived in 3 years time as Windows 11 will now appear gradually as updates over the next few years, you understand how the process works.

So how exactly are they going to bill customers for new versions?

Windows as a subscription?

If Windows 10 will evolve gradually into Windows 11, how do you say to MS "I'm happy with 10, please don't bill me for 11, I don't want it." Well, you can't. So how does MS get their money?

Nope.

Why would you not want upgrades?

Well, you can't. So how does MS get their money?

Through the other existing and expanding revenue streams they have that make up 90% 99.5% of their income.

Selling desktop OSs to end users is a dead market.

Heres a nice read. Microsofts 2014 Anual Report.

https://www.microsoft.com/investor/reports/ar14/index.html

Retail and non-OEM sales of Windows declined $304 million or 41%

So that means that Microsofts Revenue for Consumer Retail Windows dropped from $741m to $437m

OH NOES!

But then step back and look at the big picture... Microsoft total Revenue for 2014 was...$86bn!!

$437,000,000 in Retail OS sales
$86,833,000,000 in Total Revenue

Retail Windows sales account for just over 0.5% of Microsoft's total Revenue!

And you think they care about conning you into some sort of subscription model? Pfffft. Grow up.

There are already a few things that are referring to it as Windows X, or WX. I'm with you, it will become just "Windows", and have a version number for minor and major builds, just like Android and iOS.

I just deleted my Win 7 VM on my rMBP as it was getting pretty bloated.

I really wanna get Windows 10 - what's the current situation with ISO's?

Will I have to reinstall Win 7 again and get all the latest updates to get the upgrade prompt, or will there be Win 10 ISO's at launch and I can activate with my key?

What do?

I've also heard that you can upgrade through the preview builds, is this right?

this as already been answered over and over again

if you want to test future builds then you could just use the insider preview iso but if you don't want to test future builds then you'll have to install win7 then upgrade to win10

Hey guys? I don't suppose any of you have noticed "suggested links" in the start menu have you? Is that a thing at the moment? Are we going to be able to disable that? cause that'll irk me.

Can't see that on my start menu (10162) that was upgraded over my main 2yr old 8.1 install.

Revenue != profit/net income, if you include OEM licensing as well IIRC Windows licensing makes up ~36% of their profits though that number is completely off the top of my head/not sure how current.
