Windows 10

Failed again. Even the media creation failed, wtf.

I cant be bothered to do a fresh install so if windows update doesn't work, I will wait till I next reinstall windows and do it lol

That might be due to the fact that at some point (not sure if its still the case) the installer package of CPU-z came bundled with hidden adware that was little better than malware.

It removed that for me as well, including Spybot S&D 2.4 and 8GadgetPack due to compatibility issues. I just reinstalled them all and don't have an issue, that was a few days ago.

One thing with with this latest build was driving me insane that took me 3 days to figure out how to fix it.

With Windows 8/8.1 and 10 whenever I left the PC on and powered of my screen and turned it back on, any windows open would all resize to 1024x768 and all be moved to the top left corner, damn annoying.

Now in the past since Windows 8 and up to 10 build 10240 I could fix this by going into the registry and editing this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

I changed the display key that had SIMULATED in it.

PrimSurfSize.cx to 1920 from 1024

PrimSurfSize.cy to 1080 from 768

Once this was changed I could power off the screen and back on again and all windows would stay exactly where they were.

Now in the latest 10586 build this no longer worked. What did fix it was going into the control panel, and set a custom DPI scale of 99% (defaults back to 100% which I wanted anyway) instead of letting Windows automatically managing it.

Now when I power my screen off and and on my windows stay where they are and at the size I left them.

If you go into the modern settings, system, display, it says a custom scale factor is set.

I'm using a HDMI connector for my main screen and DispayPort of the other.

No luck for me either - not sure if I will download the iso or wait.

My linx 7 tablet has picked up the download and is now installing it.

My Asus N550LF laptop cannot see the windows update yet and I am hoping this update will resolve my laptop not being able to shut down fully 90% of the time.

is there a changelog somewhere??
would be nice to know what we are updating for

Not a full definitive list, but a few of the 'improvements' as highlighted by Microsoft themselves:-

Performance in everyday tasks, such as boot time now nearly 30% faster than Windows 7 on the same device.

With Cortana, you can use your device's pen to just scribble a note in the Cortana Notebook and Cortana will recognize the phone number, email address, and even physical address to help you set reminders. Cortana can also now keep track of your event and movie bookings too, sending you helpful reminders to know where to go and get there on time, plus the option to book and track an Uber. We're excited to make Cortana available in Japan, Australia, and Canada and India (in English) with features and experiences customized for each market.

Microsoft Edge offers improved performance and security, along with tab preview, which allows you to hover over your open tabs and get a preview of what’s on those websites without leaving the page you’re on. Microsoft Edge now syncs your Favourites and Reading list items across devices so you can easily get back to the content you're interested in most. And, Cortana will now notify you of the best coupons from your favourite retailers such as Staples, Macys and Best Buy when shopping in Microsoft Edge.

Other apps such as Mail, Calendar, Photos, Groove, Xbox, Store, OneNote, Solitaire, and more, have been improved too.

After it not reshowing up today since yesterdays Windows Update fail I decided to do the Media Creation Tool way and it worked.

I didn't realise that once you had created the USB though you should click on the setup.exe file on the USB rather than rebooting to it, if you just want to do an inplace upgrade preserving your files and apps.

A few observations so far...

It didn't restore my open tabs in Edge.

Don't like the new Skype app as it now forces you to link a Skype account to your MS account. It assumes to start with that you'd like a new one on your existing MS account.

Tries to offer you Cortana again even though it was switched off before.

Nice to see the Windows Spotlight feature for the lock screen make it to the Pro edition.

You can hide the Cortana search box, not sure if you could before.

The context menus that come up in black look better.

A few bits of bloat to clear out, such as MS WiFi bit pointless on a desktop that I won't be lugging around. No point in having Get Office and Get Skype either if their already installed. Lazy programming to just dump this on everyone's systems regardless IMO.

The 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' icon has been modernised in the system tray.

Great, updated and used my Win 8 key to activate.

I've been looking at the "Windows is not Activated" watermark poking through every application for a month. Can actually change my colour scheme now too.

Showed in Update.

Then could not find it. On retry it did. Worked well then.

Disabled Cortana again, but it was getting late so all I did was check that the windows version was correct then turned it off.

Oh, it did remove CPUz which I reinstalled, and a couple of ASUS AI suite utilities which I did not.

Installed win 7 again just to update it but it refused to go ahead so I think it needs to install all the w7 updates before it'll recognise anything else, so pants :o

latest patch notes:
Finally, Microsoft is also making some changes on activation. In this new release, users will be able to activate Windows 10 using a genuine Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 product key without the need to go through the tedious process of upgrading first. And if the activation fails, users should be able to go directly to Settings > Update & security > Activation and "easily" change the product key.
now they tell me

If you have latest patch can you tell me your version number in control panel or wherever

Desktop PC - upgraded fine
Wife's laptop - no upgrade available yet
My laptop - upgrade failed - wooot! :( - stuck at 2% downloading

Snip

If you have latest patch can you tell me your version number in control panel or wherever

After the upgrade if you look in something like Control Panel at the help menu > About Windows it should show...

Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.3)

This is how it shows on W10 Pro at least.

If it doesn't update through Windows Update then you can use the Media Creation Tool to create a USB which will put the latest W10 onto the USB. Then run the setup.exe on the USB whilst you're logged in to Windows (probably need to be logged in as an admin user). This will auto choose the option to keep your user files and apps and upgrade the system to the latest W10 build / version as mentioned above.

I don't think there ever has been an installer package for CPU-Z since it all comes bundled in a zip file.
