Windows 10

For those wanting a clean install, download the ISO manually from this page.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench

Make sure you select English International as that is EN-GB. Then write the ISO to a USB stick with rufus because it is blindingly fast if you have USB3.

https://rufus.akeo.ie/

If you don't want to bother with the Rufus step (although Rufus is an excellent program when only an ISO is available), simply download the Microsoft Media Creation Tool from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and tell it you want to create media for another machine, specify USB and point it at the USB drive you want to use. The tool will then happily download the most current whichever version of Windows version you specify in the drop downs. :)

Definitely agree with how fast it is to install Windows 10 onto an SSD using USB3 - it pains me to remember the old Windows XP setup screen showing "40 minutes remaining"... :D

Maybe this will fix my occasional stratup/shutdown problems on my main PC? Fingers crossed.

Only just moved from W7 to 10 and obviously it will take some adjusting but how the hell do I turn off that login Windows password so it boots straight to desktop? It's irritating because mines quite a long password.

If I can't remove it and I have to change it I presume it's the windows login for everything, xbox live etc as well?

Type "Netplwiz" into the search box and open to disable password on logging in. Uncheck the box and enter your password twice...

Still waiting on:
A less pain the posterior way of changing the default app (why do they even bother displaying the prompt if it has to be done from within the settings panel)
A reversion back to the inline connect/disconnect for VPNs
De-nerfing of the jumplist
A return to the more complete search of windows 8.1

Still my biggest bugbears with the OS although there has been an noticeable improvement since when it was first released.

Or set a 4 digit pin, that's nice and easy?

I did think about that but my Mrs would only forget it and keep phoning me up. :D

Another thing I always in the past used Acronis as my disc back up solution. Is the built in windows one any better these days for incremental back up and restoring. Also the odd disc clone?

The only option I can see says back up and restore (windows 7)

I bought Macrium for incremental backups. Differential backups are fine in the free one, but aren't at all quick. Frankly it's worth the money - in hindsight I'd be happy to pay for the free version to be honest.

I've tried a couple of free ones on friends PCs but there was always a problem - EaseUS couldn't even restore a basic image, it just sat there doing nothing - I just stick the Macrium free one on their PCs now for peace of mind.
