Windows 10

I bought Macrium for incremental backups. Differential backups are fine in the free one, but aren't at all quick. Frankly it's worth the money - in hindsight I'd be happy to pay for the free version to be honest.

I've tried a couple of free ones on friends PCs but there was always a problem - EaseUS couldn't even restore a basic image, it just sat there doing nothing - I just stick the Macrium free one on their PCs now for peace of mind.

With Windows 10 you need to create a dedicated (USB) boot up stick if I recall which is somewhat specialised.

I'm not sure if you have multiple (Windows 10) machines if you need to create a Macrium boot up stick for each PC, or if one can be used across them all!?

It can be used across them all as the back up is created with Windows PE.

So that's a single stand alone bootable OS (for Macrium) in effect, that can be used on any Windows 10 machine to restore a Macrium image?

Theoretically if my PC (Windows 10) dies, I could generate the bootable Macrium Reflect USB stick to help restore it using any other Windows 10 PC?

Build log
Here’s what’s new in Build 14279

Cortana in more languages: With this build, we are enabling Cortana for the Spanish (Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil) or French (Canada) languages! If you’re running the Windows 10 Insider Preview in these languages – give Cortana a try and let us know what you think. For each new market and language, the Cortana Team works to develop a custom experience that is relevant in each individual market and language. For instance, in Brazil – Cortana is fond of pasteis which is a common food found in many regions across Brazil. And in Mexico, we added local flavor to reflect the accent and language of the country. But our work is never complete and a big part of our development process is getting feedback from you. These are early versions that we will continue improve based on your feedback and we look forward to hearing more from you.

Cortana remembers things for you: We have all had those moments throughout a busy day where we need to remember something, but don’t have time to stop what we are doing to set a detailed reminder. With Cortana, you can now save useful information like the name of a book you want to read (ex: “remind me to read [insert book name]”), or a to-do item without a due date (ex: “remind me to wash the car”). You have the option to set specific details like location, time, and people at a later time so that Cortana will surface it when its most relevant. You can always view and edit all of these in the same place you see your reminders in Cortana today. In future builds Cortana will be able to retrieve these upon request, just like a real personal assistant would.

Updated logon experience: Previously on PC, there were two separate backgrounds for the Lock screen and then the logon screen. We’re merging the experience so there is just a single background – your Lock screen background. This is similar to the behavior seen on mobile. If you have a custom Lock screen background set, you will see your Lock screen background is now used for both the Lock screen and logon screen. If you’re a Windows Spotlight user – hold tight, you’ll see this change soon in a future build. We’re also working on some additional tweaks here to make the transition between the Lock screen and logging in much smoother.

Performance and Candidate improvements in Japanese IME: We have improved performance of IME especially on typing response. So your typing experience will be smoother than before. We also extended our prediction content and you can select wider variety of candidates from prediction candidate list.

A few other things for you to try

Sway integration with Photos app: Try out the Sway integration in the Photos app by going to one of your albums in the Photos app and clicking on “Tell your story with Sway” button. Then your album immediately becomes an interactive, web-based experience where you can use Sway to add section headers, text narration, captions, and other details to enhance the flow of your narrative and create your own story. For more on the Sway integration with the Photos app in Windows 10 – read this blog post.

March updates for the Xbox app (beta) for Windows 10: A new update to the Xbox app (beta) for Windows 10 will be bringing along some new features including a Gamerscore Leaderboard and an updated ‘Featured’ section. If you’re part of the Xbox One Preview, there are some good updates on the way for you too on the console. Read this blog post from Xbox Wire for all the details. You can download the Xbox app (beta) app for Windows 10 here from the Windows Store.

Here’s what’s fixed for PC
•We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge and Cortana were crashing for users with roaming profiles.
•We fixed an issue where Cortana would continue to show reminders that have been completed.
•We fixed an issue where items copied/moved to the desktop would not display until the desktop is manually refreshed by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing “Refresh” or pressing F5.
•We fixed an issue where downloading certain drivers from Windows Update was causing some PCs to bluescreen.

Known issues for PC
•We’re investigating an issue in which some Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Book devices experience a freeze or hang and all input such as keyboard/trackpad and touch do not work. The workaround is to hold down the power button to force the device to hard-reboot.
•We are continuing to track several issues reported by Insiders where some PCs will freeze or bluescreen when resuming from hibernation. Disabling hibernation is a workaround in some cases until this is fixed.
•If you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed on your PC there is a known driver bug that prevents these programs from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch. We are partnering with Kaspersky to fix this issue for a future release, but at this time there are no known workarounds. While this issue is present, we recommend using Windows Defender or another third party anti-virus product of your choice to remain protected.
•Turning on the “always show all icons in the notification area” setting disrupts the layout of the notification area (“systray”). Your notification area will look out of alignment.
•We are seeing reports of crashes with apps such as QQ crashing due to an OS reliability issue we are currently investigating. This bug is also impacting older apps such as Windows Live Mail and Expression Encoder 4.

Yes, I have an irrational hatred of this! I'm glad they're fixing it even if it is rather inconsequential.

Might be a relatively small thing but stuff like that can have a huge impact on the quality of the experience when you have to deal with it on a frequent basis. Nice to see them addressing some of those annoyances - shame they are still building in increasingly more special cased workarounds for Windows Update instead of just giving the user back control though. (Surely at the point where you are adding special case work arounds to special cased features its time to call it a day and let common sense prevail).

Dunno how long it'll last but seeing a massive decrease in the time its taking to start up and load into Windows with this update.

Oh and extension are finally coming for edge, should be in the build around build 2016.

Still haven't heard any mention of mine and pretty much every other tablet user biggest issue of w10 and that's no metro version of ie for tablets. They better for the love of god, make a tablet version or skin for metro.

My god I'm struggling with this. I know I have to move on but still it's taking me 3 times longer to find anything. I never used anything that came after W7 but I can't get to grips with the start menu. Just finding a Office program to launch compared to all the programs being quickly accessable with two clicks before.

I hate the pictures folder. I want to just bring back across all my pictures in folders from where I backed them up. If I do that and launch photos it looks a mess. There are pictures I wouldn't neccesarily want people to see if I launched my photo's folder. I just want them to be viewed like a classic explorer without dumping all my previews on show.

I'm sure this is all possible but it's so much faff to navigate. So fast but still looks a terrible mess to me.

Clear everything off the start menu, everything, in personalisation\start disable all the recent items and notifications and stuff, enable the extra tile (show more tiles option) then use the All apps menu to pin the stuff you want to use most often to the start menu - I recommend using 3 groups - one with small or medium icons for quickly getting to stuff like settings. command prompt, etc. type stuff, one with large icons for things like weather or news widgets or whatever and then one with medium icons for regularly used programs and utilities that you don't want pinned to the task bar. Might take a little getting used to but once you have it setup to taste I'll be surprised if you don't find it significantly better than the old Windows 7 style way of doing things.

Explorer is just plain nasty in 10 - I dunno why they've not just stuck with the one from 7 and fixed a few usability things like having the copy dialog from 8/10 and adding an expandable list of currently open explorer windows to the left hand navigation pane and so on. The UI is just a terrible mess in general and I'm surprised there aren't more complaints about it - it is slowly improving though to be fair.

Pin stuff you frequently use to the start menu or just click start and type what your looking for the same as in Windows 8.1/8/7/Vista.

Yeah Windows 8 got me out of the habit of using the Start Menu for anything.

I spent ages making my Windows 10 one look pretty, with icons arranged nicely, and live tiles for Steam Games and all sorts... and now never use it :p. Everything in the Start Menu is run by simply pressing the Windows key and typing the first few letters until it comes up in search, then hit enter. Even thats rare, most things are pinned to the Task Bar.

In other news, the latest Insider Preview build retains your lock screen background when you enter your password, so it seems like the giant blue Windows logo image they have plastered all over the W10 marketing is on its way out. Yay.

For me typing to find stuff seems like an inefficient way of doing it - don't have a problem with people doing that as everyone has a different way of doing stuff that works best for them and that is something MS seems to be largely forgetting of late.

Will admit though I have a bad habit of hitting run, typing calc and hitting enter to get the calculator up despite having it pinned to the start menu as its quicker than stopping and over-riding muscle memory on that one :S

Ok I have pinned a lot of stuff to the TB, not a fan of using search. It seems like adding extra steps to a problem that didn't exist before :)

Also I used to have a nice spell check when using this forum before, I could see words my dumbass has spelt incorrectly and right click and edit. It doesn't seem to be doing that anymore. I have been in settings and typing and highlight miss spelt words is on. edit Ignore it was a firefox issue with having no dictionary installed :) Don't remember ever installing one before but hey ho.

Ever since Vista you could press the windows key on your keyboard and start typing for what you're looking for. It's improved leaps and bounds since then as well with some sort of intelligent ranking system capable of identifying the things you're more likely to launch. It's been the best way to interact with the start menu for years, no more clicking!

They have nerfed it slightly since Windows 8.1 where you could search for files as well but not it's only limited to apps again. File searching requires now going to the extra step of search my stuff, more like how it was in Windows 8.

Step away from the mouse, you won't regret it.

I need some help and advice please

I have my old Sony Vaio VGN-FW41ZJ and i would like to install Windows 10 on a SSD drive ( 250GB ) I was told by my local computer shop its to slow , is this true ? and is it worth uprading , its been sitting in my loft and its like new and its a nice laptop :D

At the moment its running Windows Vista 64 and i was told some some of drivers would not be run on Windows 10

The spec is below

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8700

I have installed it in single core celerons with 2-3GB of RAM and 5400rpm mechanical HDDs lol can be a little slow at times but generally no different or a little faster than 7 that was on them before - though 1-2 things can grind them to a halt temporarily that ran ok on 7.

You have been told wrong.

It will run on that fine. Pretty well too. I ran it on a 10 year old laptop with onboard graphics. Just use Windows 8 drivers.
