Windows 10

I need some help and advice please

I have my old Sony Vaio VGN-FW41ZJ and i would like to install Windows 10 on a SSD drive ( 250GB ) I was told by my local computer shop its to slow , is this true ? and is it worth uprading , its been sitting in my loft and its like new and its a nice laptop :D

At the moment its running Windows Vista 64 and i was told some some of drivers would not be run on Windows 10

The spec is below

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8700
Full HD (1920x1080)
2.53 (GHz)
6GB Memory
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4650 > I have told it will not work on Windows 10 ?

That would easy run Windows 10 on SSD no trouble and it would be very quick
I do like Sony Vaio VGN-FW41ZJ it`s a nice machine

I got w10 running on a conroe with 2gb, works ok enough. 4650 might lack an official driver but update will find a way to use it, will even do games afaik.

What you can pretty much guarantee, is that if a PC can run Vista, then it will run any newer OS even better. Win 7 is faster than Vista by a fair bit.
Windows 8 is quicker again.
Windows 10? maybe, maybe not, but they said that it wont run Windows 10 probably to sell you a new Laptop.

Its going to run just sweet on that.

I will admit that the Graphics are borderline for AMD Catalyst support, however Windows itself will run it just fine... Depends if you want to play games or not, but if you just need basic display then Windows will run it perfectly fine... Linux even better.

Well the update has not fixed my PC's Shutdown issue. :/

It's annoying, neither of my laptops have the issue, and one is an old DELL E4200 (slower than the Sony Vaio someone has mentioned). Maybe I should have stuck with Windows 7 until I upgrade/replace my PC (at least 5 years away)?

installed 14279, and nothing but troubles... full system lock ups, keyboard/hdd/dock/ touchpad vanished.. leaving only the touchscreen working on my split x2

all windows apps icons vanished as well..
had no choice but to revert back to 14271.

Not that it helps you but no issue here at all.
Probably a duff install, if you want it try getting an ISO and clean install.

been looking for the an ISO, but no luck yet... I rolled back for now.

maybe at the weekend go for a fresh install "again"

Had that now and again where either the first reboot after an update install or until I reinstall it things are glitchy or missing but usually start working again after either a reboot or reinstall.

Same kind of thing with updating as well - sometimes it will just hang or take a stupidly long time on the first attempt but will take fine on a second attempt - really weird.

I've never had that with Windows updates.

The only update glitch I have witnessed is with nvidia drivers. If you install Geforce Experience it will forcibly crash Aero to enable Shadowplay usage. This will result in a broken start menu.

^^ Are you on insider ring or normal ring? though I've had it before on normal updates its much more likely to happen on the fast/insider rings.

I rebooted around 10 times and nothing got better so just rolled back for now.

this was from the fast ring

I got a popup today saying windows 10 is ready to install, and cant get rid of it unless i schedule a time? how do i stop it as i dont want to upgrade.. its annoying im assuming it downloaded with the automatic updates which is a joke!

Did a fresh install of windows 10 instead of upgrading to 10 from 7. Used my windows 7 key. Only found out recently they changed it so you could do that. I couldn't upgrade from 7 anyway as it would hang, so was going to do a fresh 7 install, then upgrade.

Was very quick to install. Boots up quicker now as well. I think around five seconds.
