Windows 8 Adoption Poor

Two news articles - FT that was rebutted by MS after I'd posted it, and a BBC article. Search results for the search terms "pc sales" and "windows 8 sales". How biased of me.

Still ignoring all the other articles though aren't we. It was kind of rebutted as soon as it was posted by many off us.
Have you even looked at 8.1 plenty of videos on youtube of leaked builds and seen these "U-turns"

There is so much guff on the net about win8 and sales. Unfortunately these things stick and very much influences the market, we've seen these effects before and well see it again. Purely because people are so hevaily influenced on aubjects they haven't really looked into.

Ignoring what you post then. Why do you keep saying u-turn like its some massive thing. Even though you've read the BBC article. If that is not ignoring it, I don't know what is.

Where do I keep saying u-turn at all?

It's quite simple to understand something is up for them to bring it back. They will have supporting metrics and so on.

Despite apparently reading BBC and other articles, you still seem to think they're bringing back the old start menu. Dispite it just being a visual clue, as explained a few times, search boxes are making a come back, as is an icon for all apps.

I've gone back to Windows 7 for the second time. I've had nothing but problems with Windows 8 over the months. Maybe I'll switch at 8.2.

I hate UAC and when it's off it's not "off off"

They are doing it because some people are moaning and can't get use to things being different or missing,I wonder sometimes how some people can ever adapt to new things or changes, unlike me at 50 for example just installed Linux Mint a hour ago on my fouth PC and typing this post,if some people can't handle a simple thing like the old start button menu missing etc...I hate to see them try Linux lol which is not rocket science by any means, fact is some people are lazy and hate change, you can call it what you want or wrap it however which way you like but Win8 is dead simple to use and I mean dead simple, sad when some people can't even handle that.

I wonder how those people will handle Win9,10,11, etc or will Microsoft have to tip toe and do minor changes so not to rock the boat or stress those people out.

It's quite refreshing reading the views of someone 50. That and the fact most forums are usually with people 25 and below.

Nobody is forced to use Win8 or any OS you can name, point is no OS stays the same forever and changes even new UI is expected sooner or later, nowadays a lot of users seem to moan more over simple, useless things.

Heh, with no shame.

With the media being on sensation lists with the u-turn statements I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they discover what Ms and the sensible tech sites are actually saying.

Out come the keyboard warriors?

I use Windows 8 because I like it. In its current state it isn't perfect, but it's fine.

But there is nothing drastic coming in 8.1 based on what we've seen. The tweaks are minor, and yet we've got the FT talking about U-turns and Acer say 'the crisis is over'.

How is that possible when Windows 8 remains fundamentally the same.

When has an operating system ever been perfect? what is the definition of perfect? you learn to make do with what you have. Or you go batty.

You are one of those people who insisted Vista was good weren't you?

It wasn't. It was an attempt by MS to bring in some good ideas, but they ended up making it so clunky that it failed. It still is not liked. I had to do some software updates at a Client site the other day on 3 computers, one = Windows 8, one Windows 7 and one on Vista...Guess which one lagged behind? (I'll give you a clue, no number in it's name- and for the record, the specs were not all that bad).

Vista has been the worst OS when it comes to speed and functionality. If you left it idling for 2 minutes the hard drive would go into turmoil. Grind, grind and grind. Not good to have in a bedroom or anywhere to sleep. My god, Vista would grind away for endless hours. I used to think I was getting hacked the first few weeks I used Vista. I originally had Vista on a AMD X2 4600+ with 2GB DDR PC3500.

If you had a folder full of exe's or heavy files, my god, watch explorer with the endless (not responding) windows. As well as the slow network problems. File transferring nightmares! Nothing crashed but my god, things were slow. Buggy slow. You never knew when some things would complete.

Vista never got better for me until Service Pack 2. But it still never was silky smooth like Windows 7 and 8. It didn't seem to make much difference when it was on a hex core with 8GB DDR3. It was still clunky.

The worst thing about vista was the driver situation, it wasn't a bad os. However few people could get it working properly due to no driver support.

Driver Heaven was full of it. ATi nightmare.

Windows 8 isn't perfect in the sense that there is a lot of room for obvious improvement, not that it was a literal expectation.

To completely disable UAC you have to change the values in the registry it's another bug in win 8.

You could try this .. type secpol.msc in the search then Double click on Local Policies then double click on Security Options
then find "User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin approval mode."
Set it to disabled press OK then reboot. This should work in win 8.

Why do you need it to be off anyway?

I can never understand why some people want it off,UAC is a security feature and has improved a lot since Vista days ie less nagging in Win7 and 8 compared to Vista so personally I would leave it on,this is what I mean by minor moaning by some users  .

Been proven many many times that you can get around it easy and UAC is a pita and does not need to be on.

I've never had it on since win 7 beta and never had a problem. If you want to take control of win 8
then type in secpol.msc in the search bar BUT don't do this if you don't know what your doing.

I know how to disable it but that's besides the point,UAC is another layer of security so I leave it on,does not bother me in the slightest being enabled ,bottomline its better on then disabled.

Its like those that don't use anti-virus,having one helps ie another layer of security.

With respect I disagree, why make it easy for them, might as well turn everything off and let them hack you if thats' the way you think, personally I like added layers of security especially if its free and I won't make it easy for anybody regardless.

Figure 2 Account elevation best practices

Protection Level Elevation Method
Worse - Turn off UAC.
Bad - Automatically elevate administrators.
Good - Run in admin-approval mode.
Better - Run as standard user and elevate to a separate admin account.
Best - Run as standard user and switch user to a separate admin account instead of using UAC to elevate.

Good read here based on Vista UAC but covers it all , http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/magazine/2007.09.securitywatch.aspx .

The only reason to keep UAC on is that if you use the Metro apps, because if you turn it off they won't work.

A very small script can\will turn off UAC(Windows Script Host) I've never had it on, it's a pita, never had a problem.

No surprise at all. I personally see no compelling reason to change from 7.

In fact, there's a very good reason to NOT change.

No, it hasn't.

Malware with user privileges is much easier to remove than a root kit with system privileges.

I have never had a problem with UAC but then again I don't download malicious coded programs I'm not a noob of the interwebs.
