Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Hardly, but still. A research project to see how popular it might become.

But also if you look at the project from the link you kindly provided, it seems to be more geared around using and sharing search results - and given the propensity of the FB links on the project pages - I'd suggest if it ever is released it will be more of a complimentary feature rather than a pure competitor.

Anyway, the original point was around why FB was being linked to MS accounts and not Google.

I'm running Ivybridge and had a few crashes. How was the problem fixed? I am still having to install mobo drivers from the drivers disk from the motherboard as windows is yet to support it natively.

The fix was pushed out through Windows Update a few weeks ago. It's certainly not the same issue I had yesterday (the MBP is Core 2) but symptomatically it was identical. The cursor stopped, and then a few seconds later the keyboard wouldn't respond and it locked up.

I'm sure I've read that the w8 upgrade / windows 8 pro will also include the option to install wmc for free.

I believe that may be the case during the early promotional period. UK pricing still hasn't been confirmed AFAIK though.

Beyond that it will be a paid add on for Pro. Win 8 (non pro) users will also have to upgrade to Pro so will be a further cost to get WMC.

There doesn't seem to be any option for MSDN/TechNet users at the moment.

Personally I'm hoping that there will be some apps created for Win 8 to support LiveTV/Guide/Recordings that will remove the need for WMC altogether, but not expecting MS to do this and will rely on third parties.

For my HTPC's as they are effectively my SkyHD boxes now I'm sticking with Windows 7.

I guess Microsoft want to take as much info as they can from people because once you link your FB account they will be able to see any info they want on your FB page. :D

Maybe, maybe not. I'm guessing that they want to tie in with FB to keep themselves and their products relevant - it does make things easier for the end user - and no doubt there will be advertising revenue to be had as well.

If it's the same problem try installing Hyper-V I read that this was used as a temporary workaround before MS released the fix.

Could someone clear this up for me

I turn on my pc
I have no passwor

What am i greeted with?

With win 7 on my htpc all there is is a desktop wallpaper of my choosing on the tv.
The task bar auto hides and have media centre, ff, thunderbird pinned

Is win 8 metro? With those ugly squares?

Well I decided to give the RTM version a little whirl (in VirtualBox). Still can't get very excited about it, although I've only played for about 20 minutes in all so far.

I find the menu system highly irritating, and after only installing 3 bits of software, there's about 15 new icons on the menu. Looks extremely untidy IMHO.

I've got a ghost image of my main machine, so I might actually install the 64 bit version on here and see what it's like on a real desktop for gaming as opposed to a VM.

I'm going to install it, only because the dev preview broke and deleted itself somehow, so it's a pain to get into Windows 7.

Unpin everything from the Start Screen except Media Center, FF and Thunderbird is your best bet.

No WMC on RTM yet, so can't try it, but even if you auto-ran WMC from boot/logon it wouldn't gain focus over the Start Screen so you had to select it again. At least the MS RC6 remote worked reasonably well on the Start Screen - which opens up some good possibilities for HTPCs.

Still testing out release preview.
Also seems odd that the lock screen isn't an option as a screen saver. The metro side of things just seems a bit bolted on rather than integrated. Odd for instance that in the desktop you can't right click on a photo etc and have a share to facebook etc. Even in metro the sharing feature seems very clunky, even though I linked facebook account to Microsoft it doesn't show FB as a share option, only Mail. Ugly UI at times when various menu bars open. The old messenger groupings seem to have disappeared too so it seems you either share contact details to all or no one, unless adding people to a block list but that seems a longer way of achieving that. Perhaps on a PC (not also having a windows phone or tablet) it would be better to remove most Metro Apps and just use the Start UI for desktop apps.

Just upgraded my home PC from 7 to 8 Pro. Took about 15 minutes and everything is working as it should that I've tested so far

Loving the multi monitor task bar and independent backgrounds! It's a shame you can't set individual task bars to autohide but nevermind..

I do it generally the other way round...

Only Metro Apps on the Start Screen
Key programs pinned to desktop taskbar
Less used programs either by search or all apps in Start Screen

For me that works well, I'm only using the Start Screen for Win 8 Apps and Search typically. So I only get Start Screen when I want it and it doesn't get in the way of my normal workflow on the desktop.
