Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

which touch mouse do you guys recommend for win 8 for all the gesture/touch control stuff?

I'd wait for it to be out a while longer before gathering recommendations. Personally I think it's fine without specific hardware, but over time as the platform matures and apps get better I think people might be spending more time in Metro land at which point a new mouse or keyboard might make sense.

Always worth keeping an eye on what MS themselves are offering too

i like the wedge touch mouse, i have small hands so it would be great
sounds a bit overpriced but hm maybe its good^^

Got WMC installed, thought the code wasn't working but went fine for me. Shame it doesn't have a tunerfree option already built in, I'm guessing the tunerfree plugin won't work yet on this version?

Have W8 pro running on my media box plugged in to a 42" plasma. Gotta say it's pretty horrible to use, the store is so hard to navigate with so much wasted space, it's just endless scrolling. Still can't believe they released what is basically the windows mobile 7 UI for PC's. How is this in any way better than the OS X app store?

Scroll left and right is hard to navigate?

It doesn't need overpriced, underspecced hardware that locks you into one manufacturer forever to run? :p;):D

well it doesn't scroll smoothly left and right, it's typical Windows jerk-o-vision. You can't scroll with a trackpad if your not in the middle. Using arrows selects one square at a time. There's no visible scroll bars. In the browse screen listing the categories you end up scrolling what would be equivalent of about 20 meters of screen space. I just don't understand why we're going sideways when mouse wheels, browsers etc all go up and down which we're all so used to. There's also always something half cut-off at the edge of the screen grrr.

Ignoring the terrible Metro part it seems like such a solid windows upgrade. It's faster and has better task manager etc. Wonder if windows 2012 server will have these feature and we can turn it in to a 'desktop' with full DX/gaming support like we could in the past, that would rock.

Windows Server has Metro too.

Whilst happy with running Windows 8 (RP) I agree about the App Store. It really isn't well organised and could do with a search function so one can hone in on the app for the job. However, it is early days for the store and there aren't very many useful apps there yet so I expect that more will come along as the release date for Windows 8 comes nearer.

That said, there are going to have to be some really useful things turn up before I start using any apps as ordinary Windows applications have been fine for me for years.

Yep it's not easy to find stuff just by browsing, and it will only get worse, particularly as the name of some apps isn't particularly descriptive of what the app is until you go into the details for it.

But you can search, just use the standard Win8 search (I.e. Start-Type something) and select the Store, it will launch automatically with the results.

Release Preview RSAT pack doesn't seem to work on RTM, however manually copying the .msc files from a Windows 7 PC seems to work.. Apart from Hyper-V Manager which loads but will not connect to any hosts below Server 2012 :(

Odd issue I had last night. Installed Windows 8 RTM and never shut down until end of the night. Randomly powered it back on before going to bed and was greeted with a blinking underscore.

Turns out, my boot order was set to DVD/USB/HDD. (I leave my external plugged in all the time).

Obviously there is no OS on the external, but Windows 8 actually stopped trying to boot after failing to boot from the USB, whereas Windows 7 had no issues finding the internal drive. Seems odd that Windows 8 would just give up.

Anyone got a good getting started guide for this? I don't want to completely ignore Metro (or whatever its called now) but so far it's just getting in the way! Also I notice they havent fixed the Cleartype rubbish, turning it 'off' in Vista/7/8 does absolutely nothing. Still looks like a theres a layer of grease over my screen!

I think I've discovered how this might be good, Desktop on my main screen with metro on my secondary. Pretty sweet! This would be perfect with a Metro version of Winamp or Foobar.

Like this!
