 RTM is the "final final" version that's released to the masses - why wouldn't it work?

There'll no doubt be updates released between now and October. Those currently running RTM will be able to update as they are released. Those upgrading in October and beyond will have to apply them then.

Unpin everything from the Start Screen except Media Center, FF and Thunderbird is your best bet.

No WMC on RTM yet, so can't try it, but even if you auto-ran WMC from boot/logon it wouldn't gain focus over the Start Screen so you had to select it again. At least the MS RC6 remote worked reasonably well on the Start Screen - which opens up some good possibilities for HTPCs.

Seems likr a step backward tbh. I use logitech mx air mouse primarily as remote. Excellent, bridges the gap between remote and mouse. Couldnt get by with one of thpse remotes

How is it a step backwards when your Start Screen reacts to the remote? From the Start Screen you'll be able to access practically any app with a remote in addition to the normal WMC functions. With the right TV apps you could ditch WMC altogether and just use the Start Screen as your "WMC" interface.

If you've a better remote no reason why that shouldn't work too - unless Logitech don't provide drivers. The machine I tested on only had the RC6, but as a lot of other remotes emulate that it's a good starting point.

Its a free air mouse. You move the mouse in the air almost like a wand, it works well from a sofa.

Media centre does everything i need atm
Live tv
Music
Blu ray mkvs
Discs.
It would launch at start up except i like having a wallpaper.

The mouse works well in browsers, emails etc meaning i only need one mouse, not a mouse and a remote

I guess what i am getting at is i like the environment to look nice as well as be functional

Ahhh, I see.

Well I'm guessing that should work too - I don't have one of them myself. Not suggesting you need a remote, just that it's good that it works with one.

I can see Start Screen being far more powerful in the long run for HTPC's instead of WMC, as there were never really add ons for it for things like browsers or mail that were easy to use - so you had to have a solution similar to yours.

But if the design and wallpaper is a deal breaker for you, then probably best sticking with Win7. I will be for my HTPCs for a while too.

Yeah i do see the benifits, the large squares each serving a function. And yes things like a good youtube solution would be nice. Wmc sort of has tiles itself. Basically for a htpc you want some sort of d-pad selection which wmc sort of has and metro will replicate. I just find mwtro so ugly (personally)

What you really want is one of these*. :)

*El Reg seems to think it's a bit poo though, so don't take my word for it ;)

Lol looks awesome

Mx air that i use

Downloading the RTM from MSDN at the moment, gonna give it a spin this weekend. I really like the look of Metro for tablet usage but this is gonna be purely Desktop usage, gonna be an interesting weekend methinks!
