Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Why oh why did they get rid of Desktop Gadgets? And also Winamp explorer integration doesn't seem to work, I've no right-click add to winamp etc. :(.

Source? Makes sense though.

I have ppt here from ms focusing on SMB customers, also it confirms officert will be missing some features (not sure if that had been confirmed yet) apparently you can see the differences here http://office.com/OfficeRT although there is nothing there at the moment.

Also confirmed is a Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro with Media Center upgrade called the pro pack available as a key card at retail or anytime upgrade product key purchase.

I'd really the OPTION to turn Aero back on, and the OPTION to have the sidebar and desktop gadgets. An awesome feature would be Metro live tiles on the desktop, that would be a nice replacement for desktop gadgets.

This new flat look to all the windows looks gash, it's like the CSS hasn't finished loading or something. It's weird because the taskbar still has nice transparency, why can't everything :(.

Yeah, we knew Office would be watered down. Hopefully not too much though otherwise I'd just rather they gave me the option to buy it.

Some apps are not in my native language and would like to read them in English, how can I change it? Looked everywhere, including control panel but couldn't find where to change the language from them.

Yes, it would be nice.... I agree it is a nice clean look but suspect that desktop users are suffering to make tablet batteries last longer. It would have been noce to have the choice.

GAMES FOR WINDOWS

Here's another problem I have encountered. My various games I own on Steam have varying results on running under Windows 8. Those that don't run games for Windows as a login run fine but the ones that do crash on start-up with an error windows blaming Games for Windows. Anyone got a solution for this or are we waiting for Microsoft to come up with a new version of GfW at launch time for Windows 8?

How does one group icons in Metro under certain categories?

Also is it just me, or does Windows 8 look "sharper" to the eyes?

You need to drag a tile off to one side and you should see a little divider appear, at which point you drop the tile and it should land in its own little segment. To name the group, zoom out and right-click the group you want to name.

And it probably looks sharper because they literally squared off all the edges and got rid of a lot of gradients.

On RP you could manually install the latest GWFL from MS (usually the one that installs with Steam games is an older version) and everything worked fine for me. You might also need to install .net 3.5 from Programs & Features too.

Try uninstalling the existing GFWL.
Then install from this link http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
Then check for updates to it.

Just had a look and some people used CCLeaner after step 1 to remove all traces of the original, but I didn't find that necessary. Apparently you can also download a more recent game, say MS Flight and that will update the GFWL for you too - so if you already have that downloaded it might be worth running.
