Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

thanks for that! I am quite shocked that there is nothing much mentioned when one installs Windows 8. I'm not looking for a reason not to buy but I shall make sure I disable Screenscreen once it is installed. Its a bit of a pain at the moment anyway as it seems to pop up for the most trivial of program installs.

You can opt out at install time. Do you actually understand what this feature is doing and what is sent to Microsoft?

I thought this feature just checked the software against a safe "whitelist" and then recommended it might be harmful if it's not on there?

Hardly the worst thing ever - IE already does a similar thing with websites IIRC.

Exactly. And they blogged about it months ago. It isn't a surprise to anyone who was paying attention. It's actually a good feature, but of course there are some people who would rather that check was made locally and not by Microsoft servers.

But now people are running around with their arms waving in reaction to some sensationalist articles.

A higher ppi will certainly help.

Sorry, not that techy, but if I have a 19" screen now at 1280 resolution and buy a 23" with 1920 resolution, will it be the same?

It'll improve, but it's PPi that matter.

The pic is a 10.6 screen at 1920, so 23" would need to be more in the 4000 range to be as sharp.
But then a desktop screen is generally further away, so it wouldn't need to be that high. It's a bit complicated.

I wouldn't buy a new monitor ATM, wait and see what happens and for some proper testing. Screen resolution on monitors show increase.

Most monitors are very low dpi compared to tablets and apple retina displays.

For example the 15" retina dispaly is 2800x1800

I installed this today on an MSI AP1920 which is a dual core atom D525 and is a chore to use running W7, its far more usable with W8 and has very little slow down. Even doing exactly the same things like opening computer management/event viewer etc are much quicker and in my opinion make the computer more usable.

Really looking forward to Windows 8.

I have an Acer AIO Touchscreen PC It came with Windows 7 and Windows 8 looks like it will run a deam on this.

Tried it with a desktop and did not like it much using a mouse and keyboard :)

The problem I've found with current touch screens is that if the bezel isn't flush with the screen then it's a chore to activate the edge UIs. This sort of design will be phased out now with Windows 8.

Ahh I guess it would be I never thought of this issue. I mainly use a keyboard and mouse in W7 but use the touchscreen maybe 25%. Hopefully W8 will make me use it more.

As there's no aero as such in Win 8, does anyone elses WinKey and Tab still work as per Windows 7 (scrolling through apps the 3d way?).

Mine doesn't, assume it's gfx reltated, which leads me to ask. Is there an AMD 7400 mobility driver anywhere?

Thanks

Got a hold of the RTM version via Brightsparks which is the student license program. Not installing it yet as I am going to wait till I get a new SSD in a few months. This will give a little time for drivers and updates to mature.
