Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Does anyone find that locking their screen results in open apps closing down after a while? When I log back in, all my work has closed and word and excel documents auto-recover as does firefox.

I press Windows L to lock as I've always done with Windows.
Power mode is high performance.
Version is Win8Pro64

It will be avaliable to download on release and it should be cheaper than Amazon's £49.99 price.

I seem to recall that when Windows 7 was released Amazon were quoting an attractive 'upgrade' price, but then ended up sending everyone the 'full' version anyway.

This probably won't happen again though, and as my download speed is abysmally slow, I will probably still place an order with Amazon, just to be on the safe side!

Any chance some one else could try the splashtop app. When I try opening it, it just says this app can be fixed in the store. Goes and supposedly repairs itself in the store. But it just keeps saying that.
Want to know if it's the app or something else.

And they really need to resign the store, it's not the easiest to navigate. Needs a search box for a start. Then first screen more on top apps, special offers and the like. Well just take a look at apple ap store, but don't copy it.

Actually there is a search but it's not obvious how you go about accessing it, open up the charms (win + c) and use the search option while you're in the store.

The charms are context sensitive so think of it like a menu for whatever app you're in or the desktop. It's a good idea but it's stupid this isn't clearly explained to users.

I know that, it needs a proper search. its to much of a silly way of doing it.

Edit - got splashtop working.
Not sure what the issue was clean install. Installed gfx driver, a hold bunch of windows updates. U installed the app then installed it again and it works.

So glad splashtop has got in early. That's one essential app for me.

Now wheres bbc news app :( one of the few I prefer over the website version. Come on bbc get on the ball.
And need Netflix.

Hopfully on 26th of October the store will explode.

This sounds worryingly like how they nerfed the 360 dashboard imo.

Well I must say I didn't know this.

Using the RTM and I must say, I am very impressed.

Don't really see the point of using an Online account though....but I can see the use for people with multiple devices....I take it that it will increase the amount of time it takes to get to desktop?

Is there any way I can have an offline account without loosing any features? (Apart from the account sync obviously).

Also - very impressed with IE10 aswell...is there any reason to use Chrome now? Is there a decent adblock from IE10?

I've switched from firefox to ie10 and loving it. its fast and great.

also even if you don't have multiple devices, if you reinstall a lot of your settings are still synced.

Logging in is as quick as a local account - although you're "signing in" to get into your computer account it's done locally.

It is convenient to sign in with your Microsoft account, as your SkyDrive appears automatically, email etc. And in the future Metro apps with save/roam settings that are linked to your account and so on. And as mentioned if you need to reinstall you can claw back a lot of your personalization settings.

Yep, you can literally create a local user account like you would normally.

IE has been pretty good since IE9 to be honest, I still prefer Chrome though for a couple of reasons.

oh wow I love it when you select something in ie10 you can do several things, like search, translate etc.

is that a win8 feature or a ie10 feature or a combination. that's a brilliant tool, didn't see it in firefox so assuming an ie10 feature.
