Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

oh wow I love it when you select something in ie10 you can do several things, like search, translate etc.

is that a win8 feature or a ie10 feature or a combination. that's a brilliant tool, didn't see it in firefox so assuming an ie10 feature.

Is that the accelerators? been there since IE8 if so, I think.

When you highlight anything in ie10 a little cloud like symbol pops up, click on it and it gives you a whole list of stuff to do from email, to translation.
Neat feature, haven't use ie much at all in the past, but someone in another thread told me how to remove the name and just show favicons, which was my biggest bug near. I'm now sold on ie10 and on installed w8 again, this time on a new SSD and haven't bothered installing Firefox.

The ms sites also are so much more responsive on ie than Firefox.

Edit - yep introduced in i8 seems a few more options since then, very cool feature.

Using the RTM and I must say, I am very impressed.

Don't really see the point of using an Online account though....but I can see the use for people with multiple devices....I take it that it will increase the amount of time it takes to get to desktop?

Is there any way I can have an offline account without loosing any features? (Apart from the account sync obviously).

Also - very impressed with IE10 aswell...is there any reason to use Chrome now? Is there a decent adblock from IE10?

You can use TPL's which is what I've been doing in IE9:

anyone else played around with it much on a domain yet? installed the rtm version yesterday at work and got it on the domain, wondering how customizable metro is via gpo.

Does it matter what email address you use to set up the Windows account? Does it have to be a hotmail/outlook? any advantages to using a MS one??

You can use a local account if you want, and then sign in to services individually in each app. Though the user setup wizard steers you to an MS one.

Using an MS account is good (any privacy concerns aside) as it automatically logs you into all your MS services, Skydrive, Outlook, Xbox etc if these are linked to your account. Also it syncs your settings if you allow it to. So if you log in to another machine it will remember some of your customisations, like desktop themes etc. It will also sync your IE. Not just the favourites, but also history, logins and passwords for sites.

I was quite impressed when I used the same account for RP in RTM - and on different machines - to find I didn't have to go digging out usernames and passwords for a lot of things :)

I saw the comments on HUKD's is this the full disc version or download or even an upgrade. Seems to be some confusion.

I don't know what the confusion is about

That is a good point, I was going to pre-order this but then I read about the upgrade price which I may take up.

Here's the question though, do you think the upgrade for £24.99 will allow a clean install or if I ever wanted to a restore would one need to install Win 7 first then upgrade?

I don't know, but is £25 worth it even if its the latter.
as well as you have refresh and the other one. meaning only time you should need to reinstall is a new build or massive hardware change.
