Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

as its gone, it's not coming back. Desktop is running like a metro app. It's there for legally support, it's been replaced by something better. all the people moaning will love it when windows9 is released and all the "errors" are fixed. But it's not errors it's just people learning and embracing the change.
It's happened before and it'll happene again.

Just like vista, it's oh so terrible, oh wait but you love w7 which is barely different, you just got used to the changes.

If you actually read what I wrote I said I've enjoyed every version of Windows - that included Vista - it wasn't as good as Windows 7 but it had made an improvement in terms of stability and security.

I won't love this when Windows 9 comes out if it's the same. If you look at every OS since Windows 95 then you will notice a common theme. They all have a Start Menu. They all have a visible desktop. They're all customisable. I don't mind them developing new interefaces if the base operating system is there. I can't see the problem with having a choice. My main concern is that this will be a massive mistake and it will take several OS releases before it gets back to a normal OS.

M.

Have I missed something, doesn't windows 8? I press the start button on my keyboard or move the mouse to the right of the screen and click the start button I get a start menu. Yeah it's full screen but it has more functionality. My desktop looks exactly the same as Windows 7 (with an added wallpaper, I didn't have one before and less clutter because it's a fresh install).

It's only taken me a half day of playing to decide I'm going to like Win8. Was strange at frist, but then what new OS isn't.

The move from Office 2003 to 2007 was strange, but if you look back at it now, Office 2003 looks awful in comparison.

Well either my hyper-v is broke or i'm doing something wrong. All i can do is click in the task bar, either on IE, explorer or the familiar system tray icons bottom right.
Hovering the mouse to the edge of the screen (bearing in mind i'm accessing this from hyper-v manager) doesn't do anything.

Try the 4 corners of the screen.

Anyone using windows 8 as their main OS now?

Nope, its running as a dual boot. The fact that something simple like the Xonar Control Panel don't work, leads me to believe something i might rely on might not work too.

I will continue to test tho. I have freed up some HDD space to intstall stuff.

95% of the negative comments in this thread are people just moaning because something has changed, even when theres a better alternative. It's sad and pathetic. It's also amazing these people have made it this far in life if they're like this with anything that changes.

But in lot of ways its not better? How for instance are full sized metro apps better than what we have now? Where you can only have two up at a time?...its going backwards not forwards.

The task bar disappearing is just silly for anyone who uses a few applications or more at a time. I'd like the option to bring that back when I need it.

I just can't see how anyone can say this is better than even XP in terms of easy of use when using a mouse. Sure, for touch-screen it's awesome, and my next laptop will undoubtedly be a Win8 transformer style tablet. But for normal desktop use with a mouse, or a laptop touchpad, I just can't see how anyone can think this is better?

And this isn't a case of not liking change, I thought the interface looked awesome, and I really, really want to like it, but in practical use, on my laptop, I find W7 so much better.

What I think they should have done with W8 is one of the following -

Give an option for booting straight into desktop with a start button, disabling metro and allowing metro 'apps' to run as windowed programs.

OR

Disable desktop entirely, give the option for having a permanent taskbar showing all open apps/programs as well a a start, or 'all apps' button.

Basically, they've gone too far away from the desktop environment, but not far enough away for it not to seem disjointed and odd. They've reached an odd middle ground where people used to the current desktop experience find it weird and annoying, and people running tablets will have absolutely no use for the desktop 'app'.

Having said that, I think in the end it's a step in the right direction, as windows needs the tablet market to survive, but it's a faltering step which hurts my head.

Yeah, it's the one that that's stopping me, as I'd love to use it for its speed.
But I think the Xonar stuff is due to the Xonar drivers having an O/S check.

I don't believe those who say they've got it working either, I mean maybe the driver works, but not the panel. :p

Yet Win 8 runs even better than 7, and boots faster, starts software faster, uses less RAM, uses less processes, even people are getting lower CPU temperatures. It's also more secure, and does considerably more than 7. Even basic every day tasks like file copying has improved, everything is better. And many things are streamlined and quicker to do if people would stop trying to use it as if it's 7, and instead actually learn stuff.

I don't oppose change. I have it on dual boot. I'm testing it out with how I work and the sort of applications I use. I have VS 2010, SQ Server, MySQL, IIS, many games, and related apps and utilities and drivers. At the moment, there are problems with the Xonar control centre app, that doesn't work. I use that when on TS3 with my guild friends.

I also webcam my family in France a few times a month, so I wanna make sure that works well too. I'll probably move to Windows 8 when released, if what i need works ok.

XP? You're joking, right? I stopped using it the moment Vista was released and haven't looked back. It's dated beyond belief (no DX10/11 support being the obvious one) and the people still using it weren't the main demographic that Microsoft was going after. I prefer Metro because it takes up the full screen, rather than presenting everything in a tiny windows that requires endless scrolling and has minimal customisability. The dynamic tiles are useful for content updates (like the social media one) and it looks more appealing. It seems rather pointless to have a high resolution display only to use a tiny fraction of it for launching programs. Win7 introduced the Superbar, which considerably decreased the amount I used the Start Menu - Win8 just takes it to the next level.

For me Metro isn't the be-all-and-end-all of the Windows 8. It is actually the other features that appeal to me more (improvements to file transfers, task manager, multi-monitor, Storage Spaces, security, performance improvements, cloud-based account migration, etc).

Can you add a shortcut too the 'all apps' screen to the desktop bottom bar?
Just press Win+Q.

I've been using Windows 8 Consumer Preview as my default operating system since the day of release. I started the download within a minute of it appearing online and it took an hour to download and create a bootable USB pendrive. It obviously takes some getting used to but I'm very happy with it. I need to do some further compatibility testing with it but I'll likely stick with it to release and pre-order it.

I can understand why people don't like Windows 8. However, if you give it time and are willing to adapt to the changes you'll realise that it's not actually all that different. And I still expect that Microsoft will make quite a lot of changes between now and release, just like they did between the Developer and Consumer versions.
