Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I just can't see how anyone can say this is better than even XP in terms of easy of use when using a mouse.

It is easy to use with a mouse though, you must be doing something wrong?

You don't have to use the inbuilt full screen app's
It takes less than 5 minutes to set up the start screen to mimic functionality of the old start menu...

....LEARN HOW THE NEW SYSTEM WORKS!!

Its the best MS have done to date.

now go back and read what TAC4U said

But a very pointless OS for desktop users, if you are going to have to do that for it to be any good for a mouse, wouldn't you say?

The main thing for XP is it can use as little as 100 meg on boot. Not sure what win8 is but its not relevant for a newer machine

Yes win8 works as a main OS. The dev version was a bit unstable but this is fine. Same old desktop and taskbar, etc I spot the odd graphics glitch but nothing big, some drivers are bound to be off but actually it setup up everything without me doing a thing. All I did was add chrome.

The boot menu seems to work ok now and I see it still shows Ubuntu installed as a choice

I can remember when people hated the start menu. I never really liked it but win7 had it about right. If you are really stick in the mud old school you might not even notice its gone, cant remember what ver it came in on but I always preferred the desktop or file manager aka 8bit windows

win95 was the most worthless version ever I think. I went from 3.11 (the best :p ) right to XP then right to w7. In that context, use this now

Personally I use as is. I also don't have a problem using it as a desktop OS with a mouse,

dude you click OK!? no swiping, no weird gestures. Just click and scroll hows that hard or different? Sure its one fits all start screen but it is executed well and it works, I really don't get why people are saying its difficult to use with a mouse....YOU JUST CLICK.

Well I did not like the way you have to put your mouse in a corner and then wait for something to pop up and then go to it, it all takes much longer than what can be done in 7

also when one app is opened and takes away any functionality of the rest of your desktop, it soon becomes a chore just getting out and into something else, for me personally anyway.

What exactly are you waiting for to pop up?

Switching tasks top left, click it and instantly switches, bottom left start menu instantly opens, top right move the mouse down opens the charms and that wasn't even in Windows 7 so it can't be quicker or slower.

I never gave it a lot of time, tbh, it just seemed so anti mouse to me personally, how quick can you get to control panel in 8? it takes me less than a second in 7(using the mouse).

2 clicks its on my start screen

click bottom left
click control panel

edit its probably closer to the bottom left than it is in w7

This is EXACTLY the problem. Rather than learn how it works you simply complain about it. Opening the Control Panel is a case of right-clicking the start corner and selecting it; or left clicking and selecting it. And in fact you can now more quickly access Device Manager, Power Options, Disk Management, Network Connections, Command Prompt... actually, you can use it yourself. I'm fed up of explaining to people who are too lazy or incompetent to find out themselves.

Try to actually use it before claiming that the sky is falling.

XP? You're joking, right?

I realise XP is very dated in many ways, but for actual ease of use with a mouse, which is what I stated in my earlier post, I still think it's simpler to use.

'Oh look the startup screen, I'll just slide that away, which is totally natural using a mouse (it isn't.)'

'I'm bored now, I'd better turn off the PC. Hmm, I'll just hover around the bottom left of the screen and wait for a menu to popup, only three more clicks till I can turn it off!'

That's mostly the sort of thing I'm talking about, these stupid touchscreen commands you have to use a mouse for. Also, how do you search in the market?!

You sir, need to untwist your knickers, it's an OS, I don't like some of the new interfaces and am stating such.

Did your girlfriend write the OS? (Or your mum). I just can't see why you are so passionately defending it, it's not a difficult OS as such to use, it's just counter intuitive unless you start fondling your desktop screen, which would be great..

I think people are not used to learning a new OS tbh.

In the past fiddling around was normal when using a new OS, in fact it was half the fun of it. Windows hasn't really changed much since Windows95.

Yep, I did figure that last bit out.

To be honest, I'm not really that anti-w8, infact I'll probably use it on none-touchscreen devices. It would've just been nice if it was a bit more mouse friendly.
