Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Aye I've got stuff grouped but like with the lack of folders feature, there's no way I can see to label groups. That too would have been fine, to be able to put a label to groups such as "Imaging Apps" and then when you use the inline type to search function, you could search for a labelled group as opposed to scrolling all the way to the right for labels starting with later letters of the alphabet.

Zoom out to view all apps and then right click on a group. it'll bring up the context menu at the bottom including the option to "name group". I have "core apps", "news etc", "video and music", "people" (from contacts you can pin fav people to the metro screen as well for quick access )' "tools", "games" etc...

Keep in mind you can uninstall or just unpinned all the preinstalled freebie apps if you don't want clutter or just your own apps.

I've uninstalled free bundled apps already but that naming thing wasn't obvious at all cheers!

Now that's more like it.

I've not found a quick way to shut down without having to go to sign out then swipe up the lock screen then click shut down, any ideas on that? :)

Easiest way, is bring up charms bar and Click on the power symbol.

Or go to desktop and press alt/f4

Or create a metro tile

I think on launch someone will release a power options app for metro.

Win8 isn't meant to be shut down, it's designed by default to use sleep, rather than to be suited on and off.

A sleep tiles would be fine too. I don't ever shut down but do restart, and as you know, the restart option is hidden away like shutdown too.

What's driver support like for the latest hardware?

Running Z77 motherboard using the IVY bridge graphics.

So was I before I had to revert to 7 over compatibility issues. It seems absolutely fine except Windows doesn't know about the board yet so the drivers disk with the board in need.

Mine's an Asus P8Z77-v by the way.

Same process as above

Restart Computer: shutdown.exe -r -t 00
Lock Workstation: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
Hibernate Computer: rundll32.exe powrProf.dll,SetSuspendState
Sleep Computer: rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

What compatibility issues did you have?

Oh, one was Home Accountz - apparently it has to be re-registered with a new key in Windows 8 only I found out later, after chnaging back.

The other is a business program I am doing a beta test on. (Sorry I can't say more) It refused to install in 8. Once the beta is done I will move back to 8.

I've got the developer preview installed on a separate hard disk. how can I uninstall this so Windows will just boot straight into win 7 again?

I've been having a good fiddle with Windows 8 on my laptop for a few days.

Now there are many things that have changed which I dislike, but I feel there are some improvements too. It's not 'that bad'.

Personally I quite like it and am warming to it. Takes a while to get used to though. I just really miss the start button.

Anyone have any idea how you run multiple versions of an app from the Metro screen?

I have WoW pinned to the metro screen, click it and WoW loads all fine and dandy, but I often run two copies, now if I click on the icon on the Metro screen again it goes to the already open copy of WoW, forcing me to browse to the folder etc, anyone have a work around for this?
