Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Getting problems with nvidia drivers.

If I install and drivers without rebooting, I can set SLI. When I restart later or soon after enabling sli I cannot access the nvidia control panel again.

However, if I install drivers and reboot straight away without setting up sli, I can open the nvidia control panel but cannot enable sli...

I hated it as first until i put the classic shell start in and it works perfectly and i can switch between desktop and metro until i get used to it

I'm trying to upgrade my newly bought laptop right now, after backing up the restore partittion and Win7 install, and after choosing upgrade and 'keep nothing' it's stuck on the 'we're getting a few things ready' with the'please wait' animation. Anyone know what it's doing? Cooked an evening meal earlier and left it and it was still like that. Checked the router and nothing's happening (I assumed it was downloading). So I cancelled and restarted the app and now back in the 'we're getting a few things ready' stage still seemingly doing bugger all.

Is it doing something server side or something? I have't paid for it yet either, just clicked the 'order' button without the backup DVD purchase option selected.

Xbox movies was showing English prices, it teens said the prices didn't match the account region and restarted and showing $ any ideas?

Logged in to live account and its set to uk, windows itself is set to uk, not sure where else to look?

I think it scans what programs will be compatible (if you haven't got to that stage yet). Maybe your anti-virus is blocking it???

They've taken down the Release Preview download page, but it's still in Google cache and the download links still work: http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...review+download+link&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

After purchasing Windows 8 you get a 'Thank you for your order' screen which displays your product key. It's also emailed to you in the order confirmation email. The product key is different to the product key of the OS that you upgraded from.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Don't have AV now other than Windows defender as I removed the bloatware McAfee freetrial that came with the other bucket load of bloatware Sony put on it. Can't ever get rid of a lot of it as the uninstall programs fail. Looking forward to just blatting the entire disk - have had to even buy a USB key to put the restore stuff on just in case I need it if it develops any hardware issues later- wish companies would provide the restore stuff on a bootable USB key instead of taking up 20GB of the disk space with a 'restore partitiion'.

Anyway, I'll leave the second attempt running a while and if still doesn't complete will have a closer look at or try it tomorrow - maybe servers busy.

EDIT: Just found this link in case anyone else experiences the same problem although doesn't seem to have a way to resolve it unless it's just a matter of waiting.....and waiting.....and waiting :)

Those who are using a PC, are you using onboard sound or dedicated sound cards? sadly I need to wait until Auzentech has working drivers for their Prelude.

I found that in compatability mode the windows 7 drivers will work, yet you keep getting thrown back to all the defaults..
I installed X-FI mode changer, and now every reboot I am in entertainment mode, with the correct speaker settings.. it works..
Hope auzentech will use the windows 8 drivers for x-fi soon..

would booting in safe mode or some other msconfig option perhaps help the upgrade app progress

Anybody have any ideas on how to change the default installation directory? So all the programs
Ive been wanting to do that for 20 years, windows and programs on the same drive never made much sense. I'd rather have the windows on partition just by itself no user made data or anything

Hey. Downloading now, before I install. Can I reformat and reinstall as many times as I like with this digital download and key?

Might be upgrading the SSD to a bigger drive soon, so would likely need to install again.

Edit: Unimpressed by the lack of responses so far guys :p

Another question, loosely related. If I choose to just upgrade, rather than create media and do a fresh install. Can I still create the media easily later?

Still unsure about this new OS. It doesn't seem that difference in terms of boot time for me - boot was already very quick on my Vertex 4. Stability was never a problem for me in Windows 7, but I'm glad to say I haven't had any problems with 8 so far either.

I really think the Metro start screen is better suited to mobile devices though, specifically tablets and phones. It seems a bit Jekyll and Hyde to go from Metro to desktop, particularly seeing as when you open a program it takes you through desktop anyway. I think the appeal of the Metro tiles on mobile devices is that that's all you see in-between opening programs/apps, so it creates a continuity that this doesn't have. I'm sure I'll get used to the new way it works, but at the moment I'm struggling to see why 8 is an improvement over 7.

When I start IE10 from the Metro interface it used to go into a Metro specific fullscreen mode, now it just seems to dump me back to IE10 on the desktop, how do I get it to revert back to the fullscreen (Metro) Interface?

You just have to set Internet Explorer as your default and it should go back to using metro
