Windows Home Server

Pondering where to go now as well, what exactly will whsII be offering as features over windows 7 if there is no DE, and no DE2 development?

This is a rather baffling decision.

I am still stuck with the one thing that was an issue with WHS (and is why my WHS failed in the first place). Backup of the system drive.

What do you guys use to back this drive up?

I run WHS in a virtual machine on Hyper-V. Backing up the system drive is just a case of copying the VHD :)

The exclusion of DE is a shocking development. I can't understand their thinking, especially after speaking to their partners. Why wouldn't HP, Acer etc want the ability of their WHS buyers/users to easily upgrade their WHS boxes? Even though the price of large discs is coming down the amount of data produced/consumed is going up. So, will they spec servers is 2,4,6+Tb of storage that isn't easily upgradeable/expandable? Seems bonkers to me, unless they have their own implementation/s for redundancy and storage expansion?

For someone thinking of building a homebrew WHS waiting for Vail seems like a total waste of time now.

This cold weather is worrying me a bit on temps one of my drives is 15c I think I will disconnect the front HDD fans

Mine has been running for 2 years now in the garage with no noticed issues. Current hard drive temps range from 5 - 8 deg celcius!

I could throw an old rug over the box to boost the temps if people think that's a good idea?!

I have disconnected the Front Fans its freezing here I think what I am worried about is the shift in temps. I dont want them to warm and for them to drop to quickly

What difference does it make whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit? If it does the job then use it :)

Because I want to run some programs on it, some of which are 64-bit, to utilise the CPU resource that is otherwise unused. I see little point of having it on 24/7 and the CPU idle for vast periods of time. I may as well have 2 cores permanently in use and the other 2 to service the server needs. In summary it will have a dual role.

I have mine set to switch off when it's not in use, using the popular lights out extension. Also, it's an Intel Atom so it's pretty light on the power consumption.
