Windows Home Server

As far as I'm aware, you can reinstall the OS without loosing any data on the data drives (I've done it before - you just pick reinstall and not new install).

If you don't see the re-install option, it means that the OS drive is not the first one seen by the install program. You must swap the data cables so that the drive with the (corrupt) OS is seen first.

The re-install function is pretty slick - used it when I migrated to my new hardware and it worked a treat - just make sure you select the right option - otherwise you will format your drives  (ie. rebuild the server rather than fresh install)

I've been having an intermittent fault with my System Drive on my WHS box

When I repair it comes up with:

error2s.jpg

The SMART comes back clean, so it seems to be a soft issue rather than a drive fault. Still a little worrying as it's the system drive and I really don't want to lose the server! Anyone had similar, or have any ideas?

I had that happen twice over the summer, I can't rememer if it was on the system drive. It paniced me a little as well so I started doing more regular server backups but everthing is still fine and it hasn't happened since *touches wood*

Yeah - causes a bit of a sphincter moment every time - the problem is it's pretty regular - I'm guessing it's an issue with my media-pc that's causing file issues - might suspend backups for a few days to test the theory.

Can anyone help with this..I've been reading around but not found anything.

I need to resize my system partition (its 20GB and was fine until I started transcoding on the fly, now I need more partition space). I have software to do it (for Windows 7...), but I'm not sure about running it on my WHS.

Came home from work today and when I switched on my pc the console icon was greyed out. Tried to log in with console and couldn't so had to attache mouse and keyboard so I could get in. Couldn't see anything in event viewer etc so I just restarted it. Once restarted I could log in via the console but none of the text is there. All the boxes are there but no text. Tried to connect directly again but I can't get in that way now. I did an external backup on Saturday so all my data is safe. Anyone come across this before?

need some install advice

i have a WHS disc winging its way to me along with 2x2Tb drives from OCUK. i plan to use WHS to store and serve my dvd collection, but also to hopefully d/l (legal) torrents onto as well. i have a popcornhour a110 and wd tv live already

do i need to partition one of the 2Tb drives first to install WHS onto or will it do this automatically during install?

will i need a media server to serve the pch/wd tv or will they automatically see the media shares assuming i set them up correctly?

if i am torrenting is it better to have say another 500Gb drive to download these to - if so should/can i run a torrent client in WHS but direct the downloads to a non-storage pooled drive?

what is the torrent client of choice? - i see there are issues with newer versions of utorrent - any other alternatives?

thanks for any info

I don't know about the install process as mine came preinstalled.

I serve up shared folders to my xtreamer with no extra configuration required other than creating a user for it to log on with and setting appropriate read permissions on folders.

I installed UTorrent on mine and control that via it's web interface. All my downloads go to a folder that is not in the storage pool (stories of problems with downloading to pool folders/duplicated folders).

I use a program called Belvedere to periodically scan my download folder and move completed downloads (configure utorrent to append .ut! to the end of unfinished downloads) to appropriate folders based on rules I set up.

You have to configure utorrent to run as a service so that it runs at start up correctly, just google for it and you should find a tutorial.

Why oh why have Microsoft the single most effective part of WHS? (Drive Extender).

Yesterday saw the shock statement from MS that they are to remove DE from the forthcoming Vail (WHS v2) as OEM partners and consumers have said they don't want/need it!? Today they've announced that it was actually an issue with their implementation of DE2 in Vail which shows that MS have been completely incompetent in realising what a USP this was.

Why will people now shell out for Vail when they could simply implement a NAS system? Home users don't want to worry about data, storage pools, backups etc. DE made all of that a piece of cake!

I agree. On thing that is worrying about vail is that the data on the drives cannot be read by windows 7.

So one couldn't remove a drive plug it into a caddy and copy data off to another PC with Vail

Seems a shame :(

So does that mean the single best thing about WHS, the ability to pool drives will be removed in the next version?

Yes they've canned it, on the polling of OEMs. Which probably means they all got annoyed at not being able to sell lots of large drives to people in one go, so requested Microsoft removed it.

This is a home product aimed at clueless people. I cannot believe they're going to try and force RAID on the average home user. The duplication is a really nice feature for "key" data, and being able to use a mishmash of disks has always been useful.

I guess at least it saves me the cost of the upgrade.

Oh well, no need to upgrade. I will be sticking to the original. The whole point is that I dont need a fancy RAID controller (My server has one in there, but there is no need for it), or the same sized discs (Ok, so there are 5 1tb disks in there). I don't need to mess about with RAID 1, or RAID 5, etc. Ive been down that road before, and I like simple. I like being able to switch off server, plug in disk, turn on server and choose add.
I don't have to wait for it to rebuild. I rarely use the remote access, maybe 2-3 times in the whole year? And the backup facility is nice, but nothing that sets it apart from every other product out there.

Oh wait, the OEMs don't like it because you then HAVE to buy the RAID controller, the identical discs etc.

Seems a very very strange descision by MS, and a completely backward step. Might as well just go and buy XP instead.

This is staggering news tbh and I'll be watching what happens here with interest.

On the subject of RAID, I presume you could still achieve much the same effect as DE with a basic controller in JBOD mode, but of course then you'd have no redundancy in your RAID array and, since WHS would see it as a single disk, it wouldn't be able to use folder duplication either.
