Windows Home Server

Microsoft has been on a roll of late what with 7, Mobile, Xbox and WHS. Nothing but good reviews. And now they do this!

Didn't they get burned by dropping the minimum spec of Vista because Intel wanted to shift some low speed cpus. Letting the hardware manufacturers dictate your business spells nothing but trouble.

C'mon Microsoft, keep that ball of yours rolling

How long is v1 going to be supported for? Was waiting for vail but not much point now DE been dropped.

Untill support for Server 2003 R2 ends, which is a long while yet, so nothing to worry about.

So, having sat and waited for months for Vail news, I am now going back to WHS and finally getting rid of all the HDDs on my desk, however, I am still stuck with the one thing that was an issue with WHS (and is why my WHS failed in the first place). Backup of the system drive.

What do you guys use to back this drive up? I duplicate all my storage pool so that is all safe, but the system drive partition is still a single partition sat on a single drive, and mine failed, meaning my WHS died. Restoring is ok, just reinstall WHS and then plug in the drives and copy the data, but I would prefer a proper backup or ghost.

Ive though about mirroring a couple of drives and installing to that, but that wastes a drive. I also thought about imaging the drive, but the issue is the rest of the drive is part of the storage pool which complicates things.

Anyone got any ideas?

I just cant believe they've done this.
Drive Extender was pretty much they only reason people bought WHS :o

Well, there goes that new build I've been planing for months.
Back to the trusty HP Server I already have.

I dont know why they dont just impliment the DE v1 from the original WHS?

They have tried to create DEv2, which as a concept looked brilliant, but clearly they have had lots of issues with it. But rather than just stick with v1, they have dropped it all together?!

I wonder how sales of WHS have been affected? I would expect a bunch of people have bought copies now if they were like me and holding off untill Vail...

Is Vail 64-bit only ? Perhaps significant work was needed to convert DE1
I have been holding off for Vail, (don't currently have WHS) now I don't know what to do... I guess as they say, get Vail, and buy three times as much storage as I think I'll ever need... The OEMs will love that. Wait, that's the point of it all...

Is it still possible to get the Vail beta? I'm sure it's public now but everytime I follow the links through Microsoft Connect I keep getting an error saying the resource is not available. :(

My disks are cold
